Blow-by is bad, but it's a necessary evil in an internal combustion engine and can't be avoided. It's the gases that make their way past the piston rings during the compression stroke and power stroke, and are then exhausted through a blowby tube, or are recycled back into the intake system to be burned with incoming air. The stream of "steam" you see coming out around the bottom off a tractor engine or when you pull the oil-fill cap on your engine while it's running is blow-by. How much blow-by an engine has can be an indication of the condition of the piston rings and cylinder walls, and the efficiency of the ring seal. The less blow-by, the better. Many engines have blow-by specs, and can be tested with a manometer to determine if the blow-by is excessive. You want to keep those gases in the cylinder where they can be burned, rather than blowing them into the crankcase where they do no good.

Blow by is compression that is passing by the piston rings, usually happens when rings are wore out or aren't seated good.
