I have a stupid question? I don't know that much about deisel engines. At pulls I see the gas engines have a plug wire available so the rpm's can be checked. How are the deisel engine rpm's checked at pulls?

As 856 said, a hand-held tach can be used - either of the "photo" or direct-reading variety. You can also read off the PTO shaft if you know its speed at high idle for the engine - that data is avaiable for most tractors. And there are tachs with a pickup that sense injection pulses off an injection line, but you don't see many of those.

in our club the tractor has to have reflective tape on the balencer or flywheel and is checked with a hand held tach
