M Farmall heads

I have an 8060da and a 8060db. What is the difference?What is the best suffix 8060 head? I raelize they are boat anchors but the later ones are harder to come by and are expensive.Thanks for the input.

They were made different years. Thats the difference. Find a cyl head off a Super M, that will help wake it up, you can still buy them remaufactured from good places for under 650. Hope this helps. ChadS

Chad please elaborate. What casting no?Just because a head is on a Super M doesnt mean it was factory installed 50 some years ago.A fairly well known salvage yard guy told me 8060 heads came on Super M and some late M,s. thank you for the info.

The most common Super M head was the 8574, which was a high compression gas/lp head. it could be used in both gas and LP versions of the Super M. its basicly a duplicate of the 400-450 head which just retained the old 4 digit casting code. A visual inspection will find a slant casted along one side of the compression chamber. This was done to make room for the new style firecrater pistons which was used in 52 and newer IH tractors from the factory. No M was ever offered a firecrater piston from the factory, unless it was a repower kit, and had the late model head design. The old 8060 head will not clear a firecrater piston, the chamber is not wide enough to clear the dome, so the slanted side was made for this reason. Also, the ports on the 8574 and newer heads had larger,and more open intake and exhaust ports due to the casting changes. Im thinking they used a slightly longer valve than the M 8060 head, because the compression chamber was alot shallower than the older head, so with the ceiling of the chamber being shallower in the new heads, this,left more room in the ports VS the older heads. Specifi heads were put on all tractor series at time of product, some times, if there was a model over lap, maybe a newer generation head style was used ! The first m's came out with an 8777 distilate head, the 8060d head could have been used on later m's and definitely the super m series.
Many tractors because of age and history , could have one of possibly 4 or 5 different casting numbered haads on them !
