As many of you fellas have seen in my posts I am in the process of selling my G and moving into a larger class. The class that I intend to move into is the Turbo Farm class; a class that is fairly new to my area.

I have a few questions for you that have had this class longer then I have.

1. What tractor dominates the class?
2. What are the rules in your area?
3. What are the weights in your area?

My plans are now to build a 5020/6030 over the winter. I am looking closely at the 5020 that is for sale on this very website.

Give me any info you got on Turbo Farm

There is a guy in central Indiana that has got a 5020 with a turbo that can hang with just about any 66 series I/H or 30-55 series Deere and is still utilizing a rotary pump/pencil injectors.

Seems like he is balanced just slightly heavier than a 30/40 series Deere, which is impressive considering the amount of meat on the front axle.

I know he crosses the river (south) every once in a while and does pretty good in some more open/non-mph classes.

Most of the pulls in central/southern Indiana are 5-6 mph/20" up and 18" back drawbar/with 12500-15000 weight classes/20.8 tires/3000 rpm, although there are the occasional stock or stock + 10% rpm classes.

Everyone is pretty even for the most part>>one guy out in front one pull and 5th the next one, etc.

Bad thing about 6030 is the weight and balance, good thing is the amount of fuel and motor.

Good luck.

What are the rules in your area? I.e., weight, engine, turbo, etc?

If you like deeres this is what I would do is go with a 4010 or 20 with the 466 with the p pump and other goodies. If you use the 50 you will need a 619 to get the job done + a big trailer and pickup to haul it.

There are a few stout 6030s in my neck of the woods in southeast Nebraska. Most of the pulls are more "farm" pulls. Rules call for specific drawbar length and height requirements, must have a working rockshaft and PTO if factory-equipped, etc. No dual wheels, no MFWD. No limits on engine size, speed, shifting or anything else, though. Weight classes top out at 15,500 or 18,000 depending on the pull. Lots of Deeres and Binders, with a a few of the other colors mixed in. Deeres from 20-series through 55s, and Binders from 06s through 86s. Anybody's game in the lighter classes, with the Deeres usually cleaning up above 13,500. On particular 6030 and a 4640 Quad-Range go back and forth most of the time with the win in the heavy class. But, there are some pretty hot small-frame 40s, 50s and 55s that will hang right with them a lot of the time. 4055 and 4255 Power Shift tractors have a LOT of potential. For whatever reason, the IH guys usually don't pull in the 15,500 or 18,000. 6030s are stout, but you're stuck in whatever gear you pick. Usually they have enough smoke to lug it out, though.

As I said, this is more farm pulling than anything else so it's not like anyone is running 700 horsepower or anything, but yes, the 15-speeds seem to hold up just fine. A trip down the track isn't any harder on them than a full day in the field. Some guys prefer the Quad-Range, and some like the Power Shift. In certain models, the Power Shift is the only transmission available, for that matter.

Several of the tractors pulling where I'm from are pretty much pull-only machines, but they still retain most of their functionality and COULD go to the field if needed. The rest are all working tractors. I get more enjoyment watching a tractor that does real work than a toy where's there no serious consequence if it breaks. Talked to a guy one night that smoked the clutch in his 1086. He was going to spend the next day replacing it so he could bale hay.
