identifying an IH 301

Found a six cylinder IH engine, the owner says it came off of a combine, he does not know what combine. How can I find out what 6 cylinder it is? Can someone give me some #"s to look for?

Don't know about combine blocks, but the 806's all had a large "301" cast into the side of the block...couldn't miss it! On the corresponding 6-cylinder truck engines, on the passenger side of the block, just below the head and just behind the water pump, is a machined pad which [usually] has the engine size stamped into it, with the engine serial number just below that.

On the manifold side of the combine block, should be a surface just behind the Alt. bracket. A nice flat spot, being stamped verticle, the cubes should be stamped in there. Just rember, just because it says its a 263, the comp. is higher, a bigger carb, better manifold, and they have a RPM maintaining governer. These 263's in a combine will produce up to 110 HP and still be under 2300 RPM. We have a couple that we pull, and we have stomped alot of high dollar tractors!

the 301 in the 715 combine makes more power than the one in the 806 tractor. combine motor has more RPMs and hi-compresion, in the combine they called for premium gas.
