I just picked up an MSD for the tractor. The 6A, and the hottest coil the offer from Jeggs. I know I have to get a distributor.... but is there anything else ill need.

Put the order online tonight, want to hook with it ON... Saturday. Just want to plan ahead so I can throw this thing on when it gets here.

Deere, are you using the regular Delco Distributir I take it??? I guess when you bought the MSD unit it came with an electronic switch/sensor that mounts inside the Delco distributor to replace the points n condensor right??? If not you need an electronic switch similar to what Pertronoix makes unless thats already a part of the MSD package you bought.

Some things you need to make sure of are:

The polarity of the electronic switch matches that of your tractor?????

The current/switching rating of the electronic switch is suitable for whatever current your coil draws ????? (If youre not using an MSD device but like a Pertronoix switch inside the Delco)????? The external MSD unit handles that and fires the coil based on what position the distributoir shaft is located (I.E. if youre using whatever MSD furnishes for inside the distributor)

The MSD unit still requires current switching (or distributor shaft position sensing which electronically triggers n fires the coil) of the coil which is what makes it fire and regular old points n condensor cant usually handle the higher curent ratings of those high energy coils. A high performance high energy total electronic ignition system requires a high energy coil PLUS an electronic switch or sensor that controls firing(s) of the coil. I beleive the MSD senses off the distributor shaft (via an internal pickup) the position and time of firing and then it pulses the coil to provide Multiple Spark Discharges (MSD). Sooooo ooo its gotta have some sort of switch/sensor inside the distributor in addition to that external electronics box which I guees you have purchased????? ?

i used a a MSD 6AL on a point style distributor-worked great-the instructions with the BSD box tell you how to do it-the points just serve as a trigger

Do you use the rev-limiter function at all? A straight 6A is a little cheaper if you don't need the limiter.
