Off topic I know, but am considering buying a 1998 to 2001 gas powered (can't afford the extra money for the diesel powered) 1/2 ton pickup with extended cab, auto transmission, 4X4, 5.4/5.9 litre engine. What kind of gas mileage are you getting with your trucks? (not heavy hauling/towing, just light duty driving). Which brand to buy and which to stay away from? Thanks!

I have a "02 F-150 4x4, gets really close to 20 on the highway, and about 15 in town. I just got it a month ago so I am still adjusting to it. Tows a 4500lb tractor plus a few weights and a couple passengers like a dream.

With gas prices being what they are, and with the potential mileage advantages of a diesel, and if you drive a lot, the extra money for a diesel could very well pay for itself in a few years' time. You've got a 3-year age range there. I know for a fact that here in Nebraska, you could find something like a '98 Dodge Cummins truck for very little more, if not less than a '01 gas-burner. The deals get even better if you can do without all the bells and whistles.

What did they do to the new Dodges? I have a Buddy that had 2 96's and they got GREAT mileage and he has a 04 now and its not that great on fuel. The 96's got about 19 to 21 but the new one get about 16. Just woondering.

It takes more fuel to make more horsepower, pure and simple. Even with the efficiency of the high-pressure common-rail fuel systems, they're still dumping in a bunch of fuel to make the horsepower. They made big changes in the top end of the engine, with the 24-valve heads, common-rail injection, etc, but they're still working with the same basic short-block and what they can do with it as far as bolting on new parts is limited. Were they to go back to the drawing board on the Cummins, they might be able to reengineer and get the economy back up. My '92 3/4-ton 4x4 automatic Cummins would get 17+ mpg on the interstate at 80 mph with the A/C on in the dead of summer. And the fuel economy didn't drop off much if I was pulling with it. My uncle's 2004 with the Cummins 600 engine and 6-speed gets 16-17 at about 60-65. For ever 10 mph above that, you can knock off about 2 mpg, according to the display in the cab.

My friend just sold his Ford to buy a new 1/2 ton Chevy with a 4.8L V8. It is slightly smaller than the normal 5.3, but gets much better mileage. It gets better mileage than the 4.3 V6 too. I think he can get over 20mpg with it. It has quite a bit of power too.
