I have a 1950 G John Deere, This tractor has 2 reverse speeds. I can shift the high low lever when tractor is in reverse. I was just wondering if this was the way John Deere built these tractors? I have been through the transmission and replaced bearings and inspected all gears. I did not see any reason why this tractor would not have 2 reverse gears when I was working on it. I pull this tractor, and have not had any problems with it. All gears work perfectly.

Yes, your "G" should have both high and low reverse. Twin-stick six-speed "A"s and "B"s are not supposed to, but some have been "bypassed". The interlock was never put in the "G". Be careful, as high reverse in a "G" is pretty fast.

It is really only supposed to have one, but that is easily cured. There is supposed to be a rod inside the transmission that when the main stick is put into reverse that it kicks the high/low to the low side. If this rod is not there, then you have high reverse.

That's incorrect. The 6-speed "G"s never had the reverse interlock to prevent "high" reverse the way the "A"s and "B"s did. None of those parts are in the transmission or shown in a parts book.

Thanks G MAN, I had talked to friends that have Gs and none of them could tell me if there Gs had 2 reverse as they don't use them much. Yes the fast reverse does come in handy when you make a FULL PULL and need to back up to the sled real fast, Ha Ha. Thanks again.

I stand corrected. I was going off of what was inside an A tranny.

No problem. I didn't want anyone hunting parts that don't exist.
