pertronix ignitor?

Anyone ever had one of these go bad? I am having some trouble w/ my MM and can't pinpoint the touble. It starts and idles fine. Sometimes, when it is put under a load it starts missing and it won't pull the hat off your head and the next time you hook it, it runs fine. It has been doing a little popping while under a load, but it is not running lean. just wondering if anyone has had the same problems.

Mine went out last month just before the pull. it was sitting idling smooth--no problems--and just died and never hit again untill I replaced the ignitor. Sure was bad pushing it on to the trailer while the allis guys were winning!

What is the coil ohms? What is the voltage supplied to the ignition when running fine and while missing?

Hey Tradition put the points back in and see if it runs better. If it does then your coil requires more amps than the Pertronix can provide. Then you need an MSD box and let the Pertronix trigger the MSD. The combination will fire 300 lbs of cranking compression.

i would agree with that if i had not run the tractor for about 3 years without any trouble. the way it started out was just a little popping while it was pulling, kinda like it was lean,but it wasn't. at a pull last week it got to where it wouldn't run at all under a load, but at idle it ran fine, then it got where if you tried to raise the rpm's while just sitting still it wouldn't run. we loaded it up and never unloaded it until we had a pull on saturday, pulled it twice and it was back to the popping under a load but never completely quit. i don't have a clue. was hoping someone else had had the same trouble! LOL

Check your wires too, thats alot of voltage going thru the system with the petronix, you could have a burned wire, or maybe the cap is tracking inside. I seen a Super M have all sorts of trouble in the last few pulls he has ran it, did the same thing you described, he had the electronic set up, hot coil, but, still ran his plug gaps at .022!! That thing would idle good, put it under a load, well, mite as well have been a 2 cyl deere. he changed his plugs,, got a little better, then he opened up the plug gaps to over .030, the more the gaps was opened, the better it got. buddy had one that was bad from the factory. Turns out the piece that magnetic pickup on the shaft was bad.
