Governor Spring

I put all new bearings and weight pins in my governor on my '51 H powered by a 300U with 350U engine kit. The governor was reacting too slow to a slight load and that's why I decided to rebuild some of the governor.

How much play should there be when the spring is installed with the throttle in the idle position? The linkage moves about 3/8 before the spring tightens up when moving throttle from idle position towards full throttle.

I was given a spring to try and it measures 2 1/4 X 3/4. Should I try a shorter and/or larger diameter spring? Any idea's?

The holes that the spring hooks into are wobbled out, you can braze or weld them full and redrill the holes. There should be almost zero play when at idle. Makes no difference if it is a pulling tractor or one that gets used on the farm.

Thanks RustyFarmall. The holes don't appear to be wobbled out at all. They are pretty much perfectly round and about 1/4" diameter holes. What size should the holes be?

Sounds like yours are not wobbled out, 1/4 inch is correct. You might try tightening up the spring by tweaking the ends of the spring. I've been able to do that with older springs, but it seems that they soon stretch out again. Don't know if you can tweak a brand new spring.
