A long-time Farmall user has told me he's sure that during the time of the "M" production there was a head used that had larger valves. He wasn't sure of the year. Does anybody know more about this? Maybe a part number? Thanks for any replies.

LP head had slightly bigger valves, the old 8060 is a standard gas head for the M, a good gas/LP head was the 8574, which was almost a duplicate to the 450 gas head. They have bigger intake and exhaust ports, use the SM-450 cam, which was matched to the cyl head design, will wake up any old M. If you have a SM, you already have the cam, but, you may have a 8060 head,,, which is the old M head, someone may have swapped it out sometime down the long road. Hope this helps, Chad

Tests indicate my 8060 head is not cracked. I found the block holds water so it seems the head gasket has failed, although it doesn't show any obvious failure. If the 8060 is a low compression head for a standard M, how much planning, porting or whatever does it need to make it worthy of bolting back on, since I can't locate the 8574 casting head you mentioned? I'm wondering about compression and how much I can expect to gain by removing .050 for example? Thanks for your help.

well, you can take some off the head,, have the shop measure how thick the head plate thickeness is, you can measure it at the triangle water port holes, .050 wont pick you up much power, maybe a HP or two, have the head gasket matched on the ports, manifold too, that will help a little, if you cannot find a 8574,, a 400-450 gas head are identical in the castings. the 8574 is the early version of the new style casting, just with a 4 digit casting code, most found on the Super M, and MTA, just like the Super H heads,, 8043DD is the same head as the 300-350 heads, just with the old 4 digit casting code. The later model head will gain you the most, especially if you use a SM-450 cam, with the late head,, you can run firecrater pistons too,,, ChadS
