Hello all! I have recently decided that my Farmall M needs a kill switch (trailer break-away swtich). I hooked one end up to the coil and the other wire to the kill switch. When I fired up the tractor to test it out, I melted both wires running from the kill switch! What did I do wrong?? Any help would be appreciated!

easier and cheaper way. Go to your local hardware store and get the male and female repacement ends for and extension cord along with a U-bolt that will fit around the female plug. Mount the female plug on back of your tractor. You want to part the wire between the key switch and the coil. So go from the key to one terminal on the female cord end and from the opposite terminal to the coil. Now take the male half and just loop the two terminals. Fasten a cable loop on the male plug to attach to sled. If you have a run-away it will pull out and break the circuit to the coil. Keep it in your pocket and evil folks cant turn on key and burn up your points.

Go to your local marine shop and tell them you need a safety kill switch for a jet ski. It works by keeping the circuit complete until you pull the plug. This breaks the circuit and your engine dies. Doesn't short the coil and electronic ignition.

I may get some arguements, but you shouldn't use a trailer break away switch for a kill switch. They work backwards of a true kill switch, can and will short out your coil, ignition, ect. A kill switch stops current, a break away doesn't. Think about this, if a break away switch worked as a kill switch there would be no power to set the trailer brakes when the switch was pulled. A kill switch needs to stop current when pulled, just like a light socket you plug into the wall. I hope this helps and all you need to do is wire your kill switch just like your ignition switch, so that when the switch is pulled apart it kills the power just like it does when you turn igniton switch off.

GROUND ONE END ON THE TRACTOR AND PLACE THE OTHER WIRE ON THE OPPOSITE TERMINAL OF THE COIL. DON'T ASK ME HOW I KNOW!
