How much compression is to much?

I just got my built engine runing and it has a awfull lot of compression. So i was wondering what you can get away with. The engine runs ok but when you nail the gas it has a hard sound that you can feel in the tractor. Im runing 112 race fuel in it. The best i can tell it has around 245 or so. I have been told thats ok and have been told that was way to much. So any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

245 PSI sounds pretty good,certainly not to much both my Olivers run around 300psi and run great on C14,like chad said a stroker motor sounds much different than a more stock engine,they hit hard when you stab the throttle sometimes you can hear or feel that "hard" sound you describe,but certainly double check all the variables,esp. timing.Any problems when you start or shut down the engine? after running etc?Hope this helps,Rich

If she's running lean there is a tendency to run hotter and detonate under load. How much timing is dialed in? A low rpm engine doesn't need very much advance. Have you hooked to a dyno and tweaked the air/fuel and timing. Try some good old cheap 100LL form the airport. It's designed for low rpm open chamber engines. It's possible to knock with 112 automotive gasoline and run fine on 100LL.

Need a little more info,, like, what kind of tractor are you dealing with? its preigniting, fuel is not good enough. Chad

The engine is 4 7/8 by 7 case L. I dont think its pre igniting because ive had car engines do it and the all have more of a ping. The fuel i have is some i got from a freind who runs this in his 30 thousand dollar race car engines. Its just like when it hits under a load its just dam hard. Havent even pulled it yet its only ran 3hrs or so. Do you think 245 is to high for a pulling engine? thanks

No, I dont think 245 is much. Bigger engines with differnt running characterisitcs will sound totally different than what they used to. When I first heard a 300 psi stroker engine rev up, I was like damn!! Its a new ballgame, but I have to add, your engine is nothing like a 30,000 race engine,, the 30K is not running near the cubic inch, and is running at what,, 6500, 8500 rpm?? your running what,, 2000 if that?? lot of difference in the low rpm engines, than there is in the high revers. big cube engines are going to sound so well, frightfully different, that it will make you go HMMMMM!!!!! ! As long as it is not detonating, or preigniting, for sure, the plugs are brown, under a load, its not doing anything strange like missing, or popping through the carb, a little popping through the exhaust is normal, especilally if you run a staight pipe exhaust, not under a load, but usually when its coming back down from high rpm. Dont compare the race engine to the tractor, 2 different stories,, and lot of difference in the way they run, If you know it is running good, and not knocking, or what have ya, just get use to the new way it runs, if there is a weak point, it will come out sooner than you would ever expect. A big moline sounds like it would blow the heads off it when you crack the throttle, or put a load on it, Ive never owned a moline, or a case like yours, but have heard enough of em run to know they can shake the ground. maybe someone here ahs had exact experience with a big cube case, and can tell you what to look for and expect, but dont ever fear what it can do, only fear you should have, is what you know would be wrong already, JMHO, ChadS

I'd look at the timing and the carb.If its cranking ok and shutting down ok then you probably have another tuning issue.

I don't think your compression shoule present a problem. How radical is your cam, did you degree it in? Is your ignition timeing in accord to the cam specs? from what you describe it sounds like a timeing issue. double check everything. good luck.
