I don't know about the lug height, but I would guess around 7/8 inch at most. Probably 90% of the people pulling would agree that it is hard to beat the Firestone F-151 Traction Field & Road for a tire. While I'm on here let me say that I am in strong opposition to top cut, or for that matter, any kind of cut tires in Farm Stock classes. Some will say that there are ways to cut a tire that is hard to tell. Bull !!! The real problem is not having enough backbone to say "NO." It doesn't matter if they're a friend. A friend should understand "NO." It doesn't matter if they drove 500 miles to get there. "No cut tires" is simple to understand. Judges, inspectors, whatever you call them, just need to reach down and grab 'em and say "NO" firmly and explain that cut tires are for open classes.

ANYONE can grind their tires and then hit them with a rosebud and literally catch them on fire, then brush them off with a leather glove and make them look like road worn tires.I gaurntee you that can't tell the difference. Before our humble little club went to top cut tires,we used to have the same few people winning every time, without exception. All it took was one person to have one too many beers and spill his guts and reveal his dirty little secret about how his road worn tires actually became road worn. These few people were the one's who were most adamently against changing our tire rules because they did not want to loose their edge. Now everyone has the same chance to win.One thing I've noticed over the years is this:typically the ones doing the most whining about tire rules are typically the same individuals who have historically done the most cheating(as in spinning them backwards, grinding then hitting with rosebud, etc.Heck, some have gone as far as driving their tractors to work in hope of getting that little bit extra road wear. That way they can still maintain that their tires have never been touched!)All of you folks reading this just take a look at just who is doing the most griping within your clubs about tires and you'll see that they are usually the ones that have a good set of road worn tires(sharpened naturally by the road of course). The other small segment of the clubs population who does not want to see them are the ones who have purchased a new set of rubber, and they are getting beat up pretty bad by the road worn tires.Bottom line is this:A sharp tire is a sharp tire, and I don't give a rip about how it became that way.I have personally sharpened quite a few sets of tires that are currently pulling in the farm stock classes(div.2)and I don't care what kind of expert you claim to be,you can not tell the difference between them and the other road worn tires out there.I have a set right now that is undergoing a MAJOR transformation,in that very soon they will become sprayer tires. Now that process is very time consuming, but that type of road wear appears to be the one that is doing the most winning right now in the stock classes.Don't get me wrong here.I'm certainly not trying to promote cheating in any way, shape,or form. What I am trying to promote is an even and level playing field for everyone.Repeat this over and over in your mind:A sharp tire,is a sharp tire,is a sharp tire,is a sharp tire,is a sharp tire, and it doesn't matter how it became that way,IT'S STILL SHARP!

Assuming the Mi behind your name stands for Michigan, I'm not surprised that you can't tell the difference in tires. You know. The round black things your tractor rolls on? And your theory about my tractor probably having those "road worn" or "altered" tires won't hold water. My tires on my Farm Stock tractor look like crap but they sure hook up good. Of course they don't hook like a set of "cut" tires. That's why I pull that tractor in uh, what is it? Oh yeah, FARM STOCK !! It's ok for you and your club. Your "dressing" and "altering" is probably why it became accepted. No one wanted to see you cry when they told you, "look, we're not idiots. Those tires are cut. You're going to have to move up a class." Go cut your tires and change you diaper. Your club is letting you have you way. Enjoy !!

Hey Lamont, I am from Michigan and take offence to your bashing Michigan. You are the one crying about top altered tires. If you can win consistantly in div 2 or your farm stock, you eather have altered tires (road worn or otherwise)
or you have no competition. You should at least try top cut tires in your club for a year. You will like what you see. This levels the playing field, unless you don't want your competition to have the same oppertunity as you have. By the way I pull a div 4 tractor and a div 1 stock 350 Case.

I didn't mean to offend you, just Marty from Mi, whoever that is. I just sort of got a kick out of the explanation of altering tires where you couldn't tell it. If you can't tell it, it probably doesn't give an advantage. It may make your tires better than they would have been before, but no advantage over a good worn tire. I'm not crying about top-altered tires. I just hate to see another move that takes the Stock out of Farm Stock. It is already far from stock. Why allow anyone to mess with the tires? Leave that to the other divisions. Our playing field is level. Stock tires. The people in our group do have the same opportunity I have. If our tires aren't hooking, shop for something else. We all run Stock tires. I have seen some who are not regulars slip in and pull with cut tires and it really whizzes me off that an official won't tell them "NO", especially when I see my friend's son sitting in the shade upset about a grown man beating him with cut tires. He's only a teenager and he knows it's not fair. That sure makes it hard for the next generation to want to play fair. Win at all costs is some folks motto anymore. Cut tires have their place, and it's not on a Farm Stock traotor. By the way, good choice on the Case. What is your div 4 tractor? I pull a '59 700 Case in Open and a '54 DC Case in Farm Stock. Again, I'm sorry about the MI comment. I shouldn't have said that. Hope my relatives in MI aren't reading this !!

I don't even know the names of the ones who have done this and it's only happened less than a handful of times. That doesn't sweeten the taste left in that youngster's mouth, though. My complaint is not that it is happening all the time. My complaint is that cut tires are even being considered for Farm Stock. Is there not going to be a class left for the guys who don't want cut tires? Components in the engine are hard to police, but the tire issue is easy. Whoever the crew is that is in charge needs some backbone. No one should have to make a big deal out of it and go to the extent of making an official protest, especially a young person who is intimidated a little anyway. Besides that he's probably going to be labeled a whiner if he does protest. I've never protested anything myself. I feel like if they can live with it, I can live without it. Otherwise I'd probably be trying to slip those cuts by myself.

The problem with not allowing top cut tires is; The people makeing the rules are running top altered tires or road wear. So to make it fair, top cuts stop the problem. The only way to keep it fair in your thinking would only allow new tires. This will never happen. In our local club we started allowing top cut tires about 8 years ago, and guess what? No more tire debate. Just happy pullers. Think about it.

I read thru all these posts and scratched my head. Had Andrew read thru them all & said he couldn't make head or tails out of it.

So here we go:
Bought a pair of worn out 16.9x34 Safemarks back about 1990, because my allmost new Armstrongs wouldn't pull worth a darn. The tops were pretty sharp, & I'm certain it was from runnin' up & down the road from farm to farm. That's the way it is here up in the Thumb. Ran them that way till about yr 2000, when I decided to CUT (grind?) at a back angle so the front would grab.

This spring we bought another pair at a salvage yard - same size, but Armstrongs - and well worn out too. Not even a matched pair, either. One looks like it was run thru the woods - front of lug looks pretty rough. But the lug heights were real close. Neither one of those tires have lugs that are straight & even across from center to outside, but a brand new tire or grinder-sharpened tire would be even straight across. Both of those tires I bought look like they've done alot of highway travel. Don't plan on taking a grinding wheel to them as to qualify for Div. 2.

Now, I consider those tires well-USED, & maybe junk to some folks. Andrew pulled them a week ago, & got 1st in one class. He pulled them yesterday on a loose-top, hard-bottomed horse track, & didn't have enough lug to fight thru the loose stuff to get to the bottom. They ain't gonna work everywhere.

The problem I see is what is the meaning of "altered". They haven't been cut by grinder or otherwise. If they were new, no problem. Run a new set a few years, & and they don't look the same anymore. And now they could be considered "altered".

Looks like a hornets nest got stirred up here. And I doubt if there will be an answer that will suit everybody. And also with this post, it's not my intention to offend anybody. It's just my 3.49859440 cents worth, computed by the Int'l World Inflation Clock...

A road worn tire is what? Uh, it's WORN. In other words, it is STOCK. A top-altered tire is, guess what, "altered". In other other words it is "cut", or "ground" as some would say. It is NOT STOCK. If those guys want to run "top altered" tires, then let those with stock tires add 1000 or 1500 lbs. and call them "gravitationally altered." It's all just another alteration. What really gets me is some of the same guys who are OK with "top cut" or "top altered" tires will cry and whine to High Heaven about a tractor being 1 year newer than the rules allow. Now what REALLY makes more difference? Stock is Stock, Modified is Modified, Open is Open.

WHAT A SUBJECT .
I PULL A PAIR OF CO-OP 15.5-38 AGRI-POWERS, BOUGHT THEM OUT OF A JUNK YARD OF AN OLD COUNTY TRACTOR THAT WAS USED IN IT'S DAY FOR MOWING.
JUST MEASURED THE BAR HEIGHT, AND I'M JUST BELOW 1 INCH. I DON'T WORRY ABOUT TRACTION, THEY HOOK UP
HARD ! I'LL NEVER IN MY LIFE TIME FIND A PAIR THAT FIT FOR PULLING
WAS IN A SHOP LAST WEEK ON A FRIDAY NIGHT AN AN INDIVIDUAL HAD JUST FINISHED SPINNING HIS TIRES BACKWARDS. IT'S AMAZING WHAT PEOPLE WILL DO TO WIN, ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LOOK AT THE RUBBER ON TOP, THE RUBBER COMPOUND GIVES IT ALL AWAY.
THIS YEAR ALONE, TWO TRACTORS HAVE DROPPED OUT OF DIVISION THREE IN TO FARM STOCK CLASS, HAD A BOARD MEMBER TELL ME STROKED MOTORS SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED IN FARM STOCK CLASSES, BUT THEY TOOK THE M@W STROKERS ALLOWED (CLAUSE) OUT TWO YEARS AGO !

I USE TO PULL A SUPER M 5500-6500-7000LB CLASS SHE HAD JUST ENOUGH, AT 6500LB DEAD ON ARRIVIAL IN 7000LB

GIVE THEM THE TOP CUTS, WHY GET BEAT OUT OF THE BOX, KEEP IT FIRST GEAR ONLY WITH A SPEED LIMIT !
AND BE DONE WITH IT !
JUST AN OPINION FROM WHAT I SEE !

Guess it comes down to what your club has to, or wants to police as far as rule enforcement. We never had a rule about M&W strokers in any of our rules, that rule was speaking of the use of powerblocks in the JD letter series, at the time,,, Sure! rules will tick pullers off! Especially if they use the rule, twist it, and sort of reword it for the time being,,, If the rules say, no top cuts, then, the borad needs to enforce it, but, what about the ones who put that smooth cut on the tops of the bars, like spinning em on concrete, or dusting them up with a sander. Are they road worn, or are they altered? Me, I say they are altered, especially if the angle has been altered, but then there is the perfect set of road worn tires, flat across, no visable grind marks, thats about as honest as it gets for classes that have that kind of rules, But, what are we doing here,, we pullin plows, or are we doing something that the tractor was never intended to do from the factory? Play by the rules, stick to them,,, if there is a discussion on a certain tire on a puller, then wash off the mud or clay, and have a closer look at the bar,, there is such thing as a too perfect set of tires, and create speculation,,, problem is, tempers flare cause they got beat by em, and turn out to be not cut! I set my tractors up for the rules at the pull I attend, if the rules say, no dressing of the tires at all, then, you bet, my tractor will not have cut tires, but if the rules say I can, then I will, or will do what I think is best for the setup. There is no one, exempt from a surprise inspection for rule enforcement, and the ones who protest, should be hit up on the same claims. Ive seen em both thrown out cause they did not meet the rules. If someone walks up to me, says, hey, this guy has cut tires, I would have a look, and the judgemnt would be final, no impartial thoughts, just the rules. One person wrote,,, if the board would look em in the ye, and say NO NO NO, and thats the end of it, there would be arguments,, yes,,,, we know,,, but, the club rules were defended, and not set aside for impartiality. So,, what to do? Do you enforce rules, of do ya look the other way,,, or, do you change the rules half way through the year? and for who,, for what? one tractor? 2 tractors? No,, you make the rules for the club, the whole club, not just one who wants to whine and cry cause they have em, paid entry fees, pulled won, and got through the line undetected, and then comes back all over again and tries to cheat again. too many trips to the well on that one,,, rules are rules, as far as engines,,, well, is there really such thing, as a stocker? Im not talking on NATPA pulls where they better be,, but at a brush pull, where they may be a bit more laxed,,,,, I say, speed limits and gear, hitch and tires, and rpm, makes for a equal opportunity for all to compete, break the speed limits, your out,, too high of hitch, your out, rpms too high, your out, tires too big, your out of the competition for payback, and then becomes exhibition. the track rules dont really single out certain brands, just makes it a guideline to follow. Road worn is stock? It is just another way for the guy that bought sand sharpened tires to be able to win.It is called tractor PULLING,which means competition, not a plow day where you would find FARM tractors.Surely nobody on this site is naive enough to think all those boys out there with thier WC's on 38's or the farmall M&560's with 18.4's and NOT running out of power are stock. It is a motor sport and unless those tires are new they have been altered,i.e.road worn, sharpened, cut, etc.By allowing top cut you eliminate people having to shop for that perfect set of tires.

Have you not read what I've been writing? I'm not just talking about altering tires. I'm talking about ALL of the exceptions that have been made to the Farm Stock class. Drawbar height, drawbar length from center of axle, 800 jugs and heads on Molines, power blocks on John Deere, and other mod's that keep Farm Stock from being what it should be. YES, I am talking about tractors that may leave the track and go back to raking hay or breaking the garden next week. By allowing top cut tires, (and a lot of the other modifications), what you really eliminate is Farm Stock tractors. Who is going to top cut the tires on their hay raking tractor when they know all their going to do is WEAR it off again? It's not about having to shop for tires. It's just another time when the officials need to look the pullers in the eyes and say "NO CUT TIRES" in Farm Stock.

AMEN Lamont!!!!! No cuts of ANY kind in the farm STOCK classes. Why do some not want to run in the open classes? If one wants to get that black rubber residue all over himself just to get the edge(literally)than why not add some stroke,a cam,and bore and do it all the way, pull in open.Is farm classes that much more fun to pull in than the open?If I ever get to where I can I am going open and leave the farmers classes alone.

I've got one Farm Stock tractor and one Open. Both are fun. Just quit trying to make Farm Stock something that it's not. ALTERED !!!!!

I would normally take offense to being called old but from you I really don't care.So I am guessing that accoring to you all classes should be open with no regulations right? Sounds like your one of the the "He who has the most money to put into the tractor wins" guys.

Well I am one of those Old men who pulls in Farm Stock and Super farm. Well at 40 I guess I am old, my kids tell me that anyway. It's really strange though cause I pull 1st gear in both classes and although I don't win all of them I do pretty decent, have alot of fun, and don't have more than $1400 invested in my tractor total. Well thats the Super farm tractor, the Farm Stock I have a baler invested in sooo.

Looks to me like what these folks are wanting to do is tell everyone to spend the money they do to get top cuts or cut them yourself or quit worrying about winning. I'll stick to my 45 degree 15.5-38's that have never seen a grinder, so far they are doing fine..... Besides, it's just way too hot down here to be out there with a grinder....

Read the above post. I don't and never have cut a set of tires. I don't even use the "have to have "23 degree ones. Shoot mine aren' even really that sharp I don't guess, just old and hard. Our farm Stock class would not allow that although we are trying a Super farm around here that might try to go to those. More power to them, i'll stick with what I got. Guess I am old fashioned but grinding or cutting all of those lugs just seems like a lot of work to win a trophy or a little money. But that is just me...

I have one in each and the tires on my Farm Stock tractor are not "road worn", "top-altered", or anything except old, weather cracked and beat up. They look like crap but they sure hook up. Of course they don't hook like a "cut" tire. That's why I pull it in the Farm Stock !!!

Sorry I didn't respond to your post more quickly. I've been out helping Pops and Rahlo on their tractors. I don't guess I've ever pulled against anyone from Michigan. Going back and reading your posts, I don't guess you're guess you're all that smart either.

With love from Pops, Rahlo, Aunt Esther, Bubba, and Shady Grady,

Lamont

It is not hard to tell if a tire has been cut, spun, ground, ect. the whole darn problem is that most club officials don't have enough back bone to stand up and kick the tractors out with illegal tires out. A few disqualifications would stop alot of that crap. I know of a couple of tractors around here at are running altered tires in the stock classes. To me it seems that the ones that are getting away with it are just too darn chicken crap to move up into the open classes with all of the other cut tires, but I don't pull against them, so if the law wants to turn a blind eye, they can take thier buttt whipping like everyone else is.

Seems to me that if the tractor has a STOCK MOTOR and HITCH, it won't have enough power to need cut tires, or to add weight to go up to the next class.

Lamont, you hit the nail on the head about Marty. Look at who wrote the biggest reply with the most whining. I don"t know how he figures allowing cut tires will even the playing field. You are exactly right about these people not having the guts to say no, to say no to friends or no friends. Not everyone wants to play by NATPA rules. The club Marty is talking about made good money 2 or 3 years ago, when there was a class for everybody and they pulled in their class. P.S. PULLER you"re a jerk and you"re probably related to Sanford and Son.

My name is Ethan Berry and I pull with Marty in Clintonia Antique pullers. Our Farm Stock Class is the best thing we ever did for our club. It let the stocker guys pull and have some fun, yet compete in the regular and fun class to if they wish. We will always deal with a few trying to edge in to farm stock and a few stockers upset that our other two other classes are not quite to their liking. Over all, I think it is one of the finest pulling organizations around and has something for everyone. For a local club to have over 220 hooks at some events, I'd be very proud of that. I'm glad people could come from all over MI and have a chance to set a little shiny something on the fireplace, and if not, have one hell of a lot of fun trying.

Just trying to be a little humorous there. Glad you can notice the difference between someone just telling the truth and a jerk. It's really not all that hard is it? You and I and anyone else who really wants to can tell a cut tire from a stock tire, torched or not. (Ref. "Marty in Mi" post.) It's also easy to see the logic as to why these tires should be disqualified from the Farm Stock class in whick, yes, real farm tractors pull. It's also easy to see the spineless official who turns a blind eye to obvious infractions. The Open or Modified classes are completely different animals. The Farm Stock class is not the place for cut tires period. Thanks for all of you who support the ideals behind the Farm Stock class. Some people don't have the time to mess with the Mod or Open tractors. They just want to join in a little of the fun. If you want to cut a tire, do it and move up a class. Let's try to keep in as real as possible.

What does a new tire have, oh yeah, A SHARP EDGE. And I know Marty, one decent puller, he is right about the rules in farm stock, if you are not cheating (bending)the rule you are losing.Been around this stuff for 30 years, any of you show me a tractor that don"t have 1/8 overbore,is it still stock or do you go by the rule of "That"s how I bought it boys"

Sorry to see a grown man resort to such childish things. Many people pull new tires and win but not all can afford them, many people pull sand sharpened/road worn and win but not all can find them,ANYONE can square the top of a lug.(If they really use thier brains.)

Is that why so many experienced pullers are recommending new tires? Think before you speak, (or type in this case.)

ATTENTION EVERYONE!!! Lamont is the most expierienced puller, EVERYONE should listen to him as he gets first everytime and has been doing this forever and knows all.Listen little man you now have irritated me by questioning my pulling knowledge,I can tell by your childish comments about anyone that does not share your opinion that you are probably one of those that often complain but never do anything about it.Please leave those of us that started all of this 30+ yrs ago and have seen the SPORT go from antique to improved to modified(div.I,II,III.etc)to come full circle and head that way again alone.Good luck enjoy your pulls,If your ever in Eastern Iowa look us up,we don't pull any cuts in the farm stock but would be MORE than happy to give you some lessons in pulling and manners!!!!

If you'll actually read my post, you'll see that I referred to others as experienced pullers, not myself. My dad introduced me to tractor pulling in 1978. Since then, I have never heard an experienced puller recommend new tires. There's a reason don't you think? Some drink from the fountain of knowledge. Some just gargle.

And my dad introduced me to the sport in 1975 until about 3 or 4 years ago I never would have thought about them either till I saw some very seasoned pullers using them on softer tracks and consistently winning. Some do drink from the fountain but it is only because the are too ignorant to look on thier own.

Ok. I'll buy that new tires might work decently on a soft track. The only problem with that is most tracks aren't soft. If most tracks were soft cut tires and worn tires wouldn't be the pick of seasoned pullers. Those "seasoned" pullers who are winning consistently with new tires must pull on a lot of soft tracks or pull against a lot of other pullers with new tires. Or it could be that they just simply don't have much tough competition. You look at the history of posts on this site and see what the recommendation from experienced pullers is for the best tires to pull with. I don't ever recall a puller with much experience at all recommending new tires. Your opinion has been noted. I'll stick to used tires.

Man every time you answer a post you really stir the poop. I agree with you though. Cut tires are for open and naturally worn, weathered or new tires are for farm stock. You are also right about the soft tracks. I guess up north the dirt just don't pack as good as southern dirt. I have also been around pulling for 25 plus years and I have not seen a lot of new tires on open class tractors. I guess that's why there are so many listings with new tires for sale on the ads at YT, everybody wanting them you know. I think everyone wants those old tires because they're, uh let's see, hard. Wake up folks I know Lamont and he nor I whine at any pulls we just place or take our butt-kiking and go home.

You are talking about two different classes,I was refering to new tires in the stock classes,I personally prefer the older/harder tires for the open classes such as div.3,4,5.Once again you have proved that everyone has thier own opinion, whatever works for you do it but don't be so judgemental of others that don't share your opinion.I don't believe in 14.9 tires on a 15 or 16 in. rim but if it works for some great,I happen to win enough with what I do.And yes we do have some loose tracks but we have just as many good clay tracks.Tractor pulling is very different all around this country and every club is sure they have the best rule, well they do for thier club agin whatever works.Remember we do this for FUN.

You know, in you bringing up the NEW tires having a sharp edge, they're still STOCK; not altered. That's all I'm talking about. You really need to see a proctologist about the problem you're having with your head.

Well think about it. New tires are stock. You're the one that brought them up. You'll have to admit the line about the proctologist needing to do something about your head was a good one. I'm done with this issue also. It's getting old.

You have no Idea what a sharpened tire is.I feel bad for you if you have to cheat to win. Like you claim marty does. You need to read the rules , they say stock appearance. If you're not going to enforce the rules you may as well wipe you're butt with them!!!
