mine came apart at mcloth kansas saterday night busted up lots of things have pics if want to see, merfild crank, looking for somthing for the summer , untill i can have a nother one build,

Agree with Bryce"s comments below. You can"t necessarily blame the machine shop for failures. I don"t ever remember hearing of people breaking things 5 years ago. People just have to see how big they can make them, and push the envelope too far. Used to think a 8 inch stroke in an A was fair sized, now there"s guys out there running that in model B"s!!! I know that Keith has done a bunch of crankss for guys, some of them larger than thought possible, and yep, they are gonna break. Would you say that because Hendrick had 2 cars blow up one NASCAR race that Hendrick motorsports is junk? Rousch has had bad days too. All I"m saying is look at ALL the info. THere are only a handful of guys who are willing to do this crazy stuff anyway and you WILL HEAR GOOD AND BAD ABOUT EVERYONE.

Before you drag a guys name through the mud too bad some of us have well over 5 years on a Merfeld crank with NO problems.Try to remember that you are asking an awful lot out of OLD parts that where never designed to do what we are asking them to do.

What size were your crank journals? How big was your bore? I know alot of people have had bad luck with Keith. I know of alot of machine shops that I will not go back to. Keith does ALOT of work for pullers. You must remember the percentage part of it. The more of his work that is out there, the more chance for breakage, based on percentage. I have 3 Merfeld cranks, and the one has 6 years of absolute abuse on it! 9" crank but with the 3" journals, 6.25 bore. Also a G with 9.5" crank, big journals, lots of abuse, and they are all just fine. Have an 8" crank from another machine shop...less than a dozen pulls on it and it's junk. Cut keith a break, if you don't like him, leave it off of here. This is tractor pulling!

I have a 9.75" Merfeld crank in a 70 that has 5 years on it that is still ready to go to work. I've used it on the track and I use it to plow snow in the winter, I live in the snow belt in central NY and its done alot more pushing than pulling. Keith has done fine by me, and I would recommend his work to anybody. As a matter of fact I have a 9.25" Merfeld crank ready to go into an A this year. :)

I 9.75" crank is not a parade or snow plow tractor! IF it really is 9.75", doing all this other work, etc, then it must not be making enough power to hurt itself anyways!!

No Bluff..it is 9.750" of stroke X 6.125" bore. The cam shaft is about 5/8" thick where the crank slips past. The compression ratio is only around 8:1. I push snow with regular pump gas, its not much work to push snow really. I run 93 Octane pump gas while pulling, I tried 87 once and she started knocking under load so I won't try that again! As for HP other than the crank nothing else is extreme. I'm sure some porting and polishing would find some more.

how many horse does ur A (6.125x9) have? i have been thinking of a build up like that, and it sounds like yours is reliable too.

At 6.25 x 9" it dynoed at 97 H.P. and then the pto shaft snapped inside the tractor. Again, all Merfeld parts, pistons, rods, crank. Say what you want, he has treated us well. If we did have a problem, he stood behind it.

And to think someone was considering a Merfeld crank a few weeks ago..... .....In all honesty, that does suck.....been there, done that (Iowan machine work, that is.)

i talk to keith about the crank today, and told him what i found wroung with the crank, the welds were not fused with the jornal, looks like cold welds, i am sending the crank back to him he is standing behind the crank, i didnt not say he did bad work becase i havegotten blocks and cams from him, if you have proublems with cranks give him a call he well treat you right, have a nice day mark
