I was pulling on Saturday when my turbo decided to take the big one. I was supposed to have been rebuilt not that long ago, only had maybe 5 pulls on it since I bought it (the tractor is in the farm class, 2700 rpms, not pushing it too hard). I took it apart, the compressor wheel ground itself right into the housing. Bad bearing? What caused that? Had a lot of end play-really nothing up and down. Any ideas would be great, I dont want to wreck another one.

Also any place you guys know where to get a rebuilt one?

Thanks for any help.

Chad

Thanks for the replies. I am going to have to call St. Joes and get the turbo with better lube and bearings. Anybody have the number for down there? I lost it.

Also about the water, I am running a 450 roosamaster,.093 lines, .025 injectors, no lift/supply pump only gravity. I didnt think that much fuel would be getting there to cause that much heat-I know some 1066's running 600 cubes and 13mm pumps no water and no trouble. Difference in the pumps/motors? Just trying to figure this out-pretty new to the diesels. Any addivtive to the oil for better protection? Hate to go to water, probably turn the pump down instead.

Thanks for any help.

Chad

sounds like heat may have had a hand in that turbo as well.
you should really call a turbo shop and get one with double oiler holes and add a little water to the intake.

I have a question for you. The 3LM I have has 12 small holes in the bearing-outside of the bearing must be supply, the the inner portion has 6 holes larger-return? The shaft or bearing shows no sign of heat, not blue, scored or anything. The shaft is scored were the compressor wheel is mounted-is that a press fit? The nut hold it tight? That is torn up pretty bad. Could have that been messed up at rebuilt time? This past weekend was the first time for it to turn 3000 rpms, normally at 2700. Make that much difference?

Thank you for anyhelp you can give. I am trying to understand this.

Hey chad, I heard it, ouch! That bad huh? can get brand new 3lms high output 400 with exchange, but a st joes would be better, better lube and bearings! Sound like the lube may have been the problem on yours, I'll call you this week.
