IH 400 block just arrived!

I just scored a 400 motor for my 49' M with cam and was thinking about starting my engine build up plan. To start i have a new 8060 m head (not great i know) on my M now that I will reuse. The crankshaft in the 400 spun a bearing so i will have to replace or repair the crank. I guess the big idea is to run a 4.25 450 high compression piston with no sleeve, if it is the right size? What kind of life can i expect out of this combo? I am making 62hp with 3 7/8 pistons now with all the mods from the block up. I pull mostly percentage and a few distance pulls so i dont need much. Cheap is good but money is not a problem! Thanks for any help!

ONCE YOU PULL THE SLEEVES YOU WILL BE AT 4.28",
SPUN A ROD, SO YOU JUST SPENT 200.00 ON crank, will need to fill the counter bore, after pulling the sleeves. will need to have pistons made up, because their is nothing of the shelf to purchase.

so, with all these modifications, look's like about 1800 bucks to put it back together !
best idea !
fix the crank, put a new set of sleeves and piston kit in, and a 450 gas head, for your pulling about 1200 bucks, and you will have a great division (1) tractor !

Will my good M crank fit in the 400 block. I was told the supers and up had larger jornals and small bearing inserts. but the rods and caps were the same ID. True? If this was the case i could order a bearing kit for an M and run the good cam and an 4 1/8 bore.

Yes, use the M main bearings with the M crank to put in the SM-450 blocks. Also use the M rod bearings too. The SM-450 bearings are thinner than the M's, Some, when they over grind a journal, like over .030,,, they cut them down to the M specs so they dont have to junk the crank. Your plans sound good! CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL IH DEALER, IF THEY HAVE ANY OLDER GUYS THERE, THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO ANSWER THAT QUESTION. any good machine shop could do the same ! your info on the bearing insert thickness, i think is correct !
If you use the (m) crank in the 264 block or 400 block, use also the connecting rods that were running on that crank, assembled the same way (1-2-3-4) Many times, it's very easy to spend alot of money, with no real gain, I have done this more times than i'd like to discuss !
