running no sleeves

if i do a engine rebuild on my super m and put 4 1/8 pistons in it and run no sleeves so i dont have to bore the block will it the block or will it be ok?

listen to chad on this one !
pull the sleeves, you can runn a bigger bore, and then save the block and go again, but !
dollar's spent verses, h.p. gained !
leave the sleeve and have chad custom build some pistons.
bottom line ! if your not going to stroke and go for expensive h.p. , increasing compression will help a bunch getting to a higher level !
this will not make a 3rd gear tractor, but for didvision (1) will be fun to drive !

The super M comes with a factory 4 inch piston, and i believe that there is room for 4 1/8 with a sleeve. you can usually oversize a piston in a block by at least an 1/8 or 1/16. I do believe that you can put a 4 1/4 inch piston in the block if you do not run sleeves without having to bore it. We redone my dad's 1949 Farmall M, and found it to have 4 inch pistons and that gave us 52 horse. We bored it to a 4 1/8 piston and that gave us 62 horse. I'd say ur looking at about 65 horse with a 4 1/8 piston. Good luck!

if i ran 4 1/4 inch pistons with no sleeves how much horsepower could i except with that done,head work done and carb rejetted and other little things?could i get 80 horse maybe? and also if i ran 4 1/4 would i ever be able to rebuild it and use sleeves or would the block be no good?

You mite get close to 80, but you need an LP head to do it. SM-450 is the same block, drop in the 281 kit used for the Super M, and go. On the 4.25, I dont know what they are using for pistons, but to get 80 hp out of a 5.25 X 4.25 engine, you need 225 psi of compression, carb and distributor to match. Ive seen a 4.25 M, ran 175-180 psi, 8060 head, big valves, Super cam, made 73hp after tuning. it was better, but still really low on compression, lot more potential. Look into stock bore hop up kits, keep IH parts in it, and not ruin the block, and still make good HP. Ive got a good used set of 4-1/8 bore 450 pistons, that could do some work to, get ya over 70. You don't have to bore a SM to get 4.125 pistons all you need is a thin sleeve kit and pistons.
