I've heard that the K&N filters aren't good for any power gain on Deere two-bangers. Granted they flow better than an oil-bath cleaner, but you have a lot smaller volume of "intake system" ahead of the carburetor when running one. Since those two-cylinders take two BIG gulps of air in rapid succession, it's possible that even with the good-flowing filter media, there's not enough volume there to produce more power. But with the stock oil-bath, you have a much bigger filter cannister and more intake piping. Or maybe they K&Ns flow too much air, and reduce the velocity of the airflow into the carburetor. It would be interesting to plumb each type of set-up with a vacuum gauge and see what happens under heavy load. I would say that the biggest benefit by far in using a K&N would be the weight savings, as those stock oil-bath intake set-ups are pretty heavy. Removing the whole works probably takes off at least 40 lbs, maybe more.

I noticed that when the tractor was under load, the sides of the K&N were actualy sucking in. I believe that maybe there isn't enough media area for the volume of air. I was told that reason it was collapsing was the filter was over oiled.

No, if you can see it physically sucking in, it's not capable of admitting enough air all at once. Two-lungers have their intake strokes 180 crank degrees apart. On a stock "G", that means the intake system must be able to supply enough air to fill 413 cubic inches of engine (at least in theory - the actual VE isn't that high) within the fraction of a second it takes the crankshaft to rotate through both complete intake cycles. As I said, the factory intake system has a much larger volume available.

I installed a K&N on my G that was a cone shaped, 8" on the big end and 4" on the small end. I mounted it on the end of the carb with exhaust tubing elbow the same diameter as the carb inlet and faced the filter down. I dynoed the tractor with the K&N, and with the carb hooked up to the oil bath. No power gains with the K&N. I have been told that they do work better if mounted to the original carb elbow. I have never tested that theory. The filter now hangs on the wall in my shed.

GPULLER, how many cubes is your G? That could have something to do with it. Did you make any changes from K&N to oil bath?

My G is just .090 over stock stroke. All dyno testing was done on the same day. No other changes to the motor.

Make sure it stays out of the air turbulence off the fan, found out that upsets the air flow thru the carb.

on mine where the intake went up into the breather from the carb, I just turned the pipe down and slide a K&N I ordered from Jegs over it. Fits perfect and works good.

Thats what I was thinking. Actually I was even thnking about turning it outside the tractor. I just want to make sure and find the clodest air possible.
