Try Crank Machine Service in New Baden Ill. He welds up and can stroke to 10". Ask for Dan 618/401/2386

I have also seen some of Merfelds work, on the scrap heap! When he builds big cranks for Deeres he lays plate on the journal so he doesn't have to weld so much. Any idiot would know that won't work and doesn't for long. I think his dad Bill did better work.

Before you go bashing people, you might want to look into that a little. If I remember correctly, he tried that (welding a plate in there) a few times, mainly becuase people were trying to get the job done quicker and cheaper. I haven"t heard of that for quite a while.

I know exactly what you mean!! I have seen 3/4 of a Deere crank he did.....and where it broke you could look in the journal and see the plate he welded in there. It is like a huge crack in there to begin with because you can't weld under the plate and there is no fusion of the plate to the journal.

Keith Merfeld ground the one in my H. I've been pleased with it. Ship it to him and he will ship it back.

Where do you live??? The crankgrinder always gets the blame when a engine fails. If you have a crank redone and you install it and don't find a problem at that time more than likely the grind job was ok.Check your bearing clearance and check the finish thats the best time to correct a problem.Let us know someone can help you. What brand is the tractor?? I would like to find a grinder in the MD, WV or PA area so I dont have to ship, however, will consider others. Tractor is a Farmall M. Have spoke to a few grinders around the Baltimore area and no one does anythign more than offset grinding the existing journal. I am looking to have the journal welded and ground to stock size, so I can use stock rods.

If Iwas going to have anyone do a crank of any brand it would be Jim Benjamin from Webbervile MI. You will not get better job anywere. He does all cranks for Gary Baker. Both of them stand behind their work.
