'H vs Super H / Pulling

I purchased a 1939 H for the purpose of pulling it. I have a few questions that I hope someone can help me with.
1. Is the 39 H engine a low compression engine, I’ve read that they were designed to run on distillate fuel, thus a low compression engine? 2. If the answer to the above question is yes, then what can I do the “hop” this engine up? Should I put in high compression pistons (if the make them)? Can I mill the head down? Is there a kit available to make it like the “Super H”, or is their more the super engine than just pistons, heads etc.? What about the valve size and the cam?
3. In regards to the rear tires. Do new tires work better than worn tires? If worn tires are better, what % of tread should there be?
4. What weight class does the H pull best in?

Well Dan what type of $$$$ have you committed to your project. What some guys like to do with H's is run 300 parts (head, camshaft, bore kits). By milling .045 off of a M head, we gained 5 psi on cranking compression. If you take the same amount off of a 400 head, you will increase your compression more. I don't know if it is the same with the H and 300 heads. If you get a good running H, it is possible to get 45-50 hp using stock IH parts. With our factory bone stock H, we pull the 4500-5500 classes using 11.2x38 Firestones. We hang fairly well in the 4500 but usually get out tractored in the 5500. Keep in mind that in 5500 you can be pulling against JD A's & G's, Farmall M's & 400's.

Call Paul at Lemmon's (765)938-1808. He builds a lot of great running Farmalls. If you order a bigger motor today, you can expect it done in the fall or winter.

Does your H have a small fuel tank along with your
big one? If it does, it was a distillate model.
You can interchange a lot of parts between the H,
Super H, 300, and 350. How much money do you want
to spend? There is a guy in Ohio named Bob Sharp
who can bore & stroke an H block to 289 cubic inch. If you don't have a lot of bucks but still
plan on overhaulling that H, have your H block bored out to accept Farmall 350 sleeves and pistons. A Super H, 300 or 350 head will bolt
right on. They have bigger ports and valves. The
best head is a 300 or 350 LP head. If you want to
keep your H as stock as possible, IH makes a "Fiwerpower" sleeve and piston kit. It increases the bore .065 and gives you more compression. You HAVE to get rid of that distillate head, unless you don't want more than
30 HP.

I cant beleive there is still some one saying to go to BOb sharp...he is the biggest crook in the country..i learned the hard way..got my money and never did get anything back...be careful of who you do business with..also be careful with dennys carb shop...just warning you

Do NOT go to Bob Sharp UNLESS you want to watch your 289 ci H blow up! There are NO GOOD stories about him....if someone does...do tell!! If you have light classes in your areas(4000 and below an H is ok...but they are really too small!!!) Good luck!

I am wondering, Didn't Wheeler used to pull NTPA Modifieds at one time? If so, what was the name of his tractor? This has been buging me for some time.

He used to pull big stuff, but I think that it was IH Super Stocks. Not sure though.

WOW!!!! One H we can name of!!! That really defends the H's!!! I heard there are some "new style" 77's coming out of Ohio (maybe 500 c.i.?!?!?!?!) Wheeler does have a good H, but don't ruffle Don's group too much or he'll get weight protected and have to pull 5000 lbs and up!!!!

Mark Gilmore has a 90+ hp H, Chad Weiland is running 90 give or take, and I have seen several others that I can't put names to.

Wheeler is a lot better known than the others, but Mark Gilmore is probably quite well known in Missouri. They aren't necessarily the best choice for Div 5, but there are some that really run. It's just nice to see something other than Ollie green or Allis orange running competetively in div 4 and 5 light classes.

The thread started with a question about a Farmall H. That's why I mentioned only Farmall H's that I know of that are tough. There are not as many H's running in the fast classes as Ollies, but it can be done with enough cubic dollars.

Leavin out lots of tractors, not just Shawn Wiens.
