Has anyone ever turbocharged a gas 4 cly engine? If so where could i get the parts and info. I have a new massey Z134 engine and i have been thinking of trying to add a turbo or supercharger to it. I have all the tools needed to build manifold if needed but just wondering if anyone has done it and if so would it be worth adding something like that to this engine? Any info would help.THX

I ran a turbo on my Super M back in the late 70's. Couple of guys up by Mason MI had one too.My blocks broke the center main bearing from the block. You can blow thru the stock carb if you keep the fuel pressure (about) 4 psi above boost pressure. Otherwise the fuel will be pushed back into the fuel tank. Could pressurize the fuel tank from the boost side of the turbo, but that would make a bigger BANG if a valve sticks. The M carb would leak a little boost out the butterfly shaft into the govenor tube so I drilled the tube full of holes to let the pressure out, that also kept the pressure out of the crankcase, Looked neat too! Get a cam grind that opens the exhaust valve early (BEFORE) the piston gets to bottom dead center, otherwise the pressure will be so great that the piston will not go back up and you'll push the crank out the bottom of the block!

sure it is possible. Turbos were used in gas engines in the military before diesels. There are three types i gues. Draw through carb-turbo-motor, blow through turbo-carb-engine and injected. I am building a blow through setup for my m right now. A blow through carb only needs a few modifications and a fuel pres source. But they must be completly sealed. You can also use a "hat" or box around it. Maybe when i get mine finished i'll put up some pictures!

Are you still going to use the stock style updraft carb? Ive looked into setting my 460 on alky with a turbo with the stock updraft carb. Problem seemed to be how do I, if its possible to keep fuel in the carb bowl, without blowing the bowl gasket. Boost pressure would enter into the metering stem, pressurizing the fuel bowl. I would think that since the metering stem works with vaccum, could the stem be lengthend taller into the ventrui, where there is not a direct air pressure,, more round the bend guess you could say,,, where there mite be an upward draft to kinda act as vacuum in the manifold. Thats was what weighed in on my mind when I was gonna turbo charge a gasser. Blow through turbo charging could be done,, gotta have a good carb set up. Hope to see that turbo M!! Would be a neat tractor! Powerful tractor,,, ChadS

Gut the carb,ie. everything but the throttle blade.Use it only as a throttle body, add electronic inj. nozzles at the ports and use an O2,MAF,TP,Coolant temp, etc tied into an ECM.Other wise use mechanical inj, port nozzles and a barrel valve.Used to be a DC Case called the "Screamin' Eagle",used a suck through but runnin' gas through a turbo is Hell on bearings. If your gonna run much boost better put a girdle on 'er and have a lot of spares. The 7 main sixes work pretty good and will take a lot of boost.Look at fuel inj though you'll find its a lot more consistant and easier on parts.Good luck!!!

Forgive me since this may sound a bit crazy but someone had told me about hooking a smog pump to the engine and running it to the carb. Since the engine or should i say my engine wont ever see high rpms would a smog pump with the right pully do anything? And if that would work would it mess the carb up? Would the pressure blow the gas out of the carb bowl? I am not building this for tractor pulls just want to add a little more power so if you have any ideas please let me know.THX>

I am building the carb now i drilled and tapped an 1/8 line into the top of the fuel bowl that is hooked into the boost tube. The pressure is highest here as opposed to after the venturi. You must seal all shafts with o-rings also. Filling the crankase on my M with perfect 14:1 air would certainly be bad! Also i am using a Garret T-3 which I specially built for a homemade gas turbine i built last year while in school. If my M runs like the turbine we will have a good show!
