Blown head gasket or not, thats a tough lookin machine! Was you able to get any kind of numbers before she blew? Are you going to have to remove the sheetmetal, steering shaft to get the head off?Oh well at least the crankcase is still intact.Good luck to ya,Jack(TN).

why would you ever dyno with anti freeze? just makes the whole engine a mess, wouldnt water be alot more forgiving.

Maybe cheaper... but I have had the tractor running for a few months.. didn't want it to freeze during the winter... The other is that the antifreeze helps with cooling, as well as keep it from freezing... I did only have a little over a gallon of antifreeze in it.. (and about 5 gallons of water.)

Thats a nice ol G!!! Good to see progress on it! I'll make a copper gasket if you need one. Ive got em for the A's now, so why not the G's too! Man, thats a nice pulling tractor! Got a paint scheme in mind for it? Chad

Thanks Chad,
No idea on the paint.. I'll use a black epoxy primer and see how that looks.. but it will probably end up all Green... (Wife has named it "The Green Devil".. haha.) Still have to get the side shields finished... (and lots of other little things.. the hood came out pretty nice.) Do you think the copper will hold better than a normal gasket??? I'm not looking for any more compression.. LOL.. Going to have Grade 10 studs made next week... and try to use a flange type nut if valve cover will go back on... I still have some tricks to try on the valve cover/rocker arm area... JDGnut

It depends on where the stock gasket blown out. If it blown out the fire rings in the gasket, sounds like the compression from that 5 gallon bucket for pistons are beating up the firerings from compression. Forcing them out where ever they can go. If it did blow at the fire ring, copper should be able to take the shock and not push out the gasket. If the block and head surfaces are good and flat, use a can of coppercoat, or your favorite sealer, mite hold???? Id say, the thicker the copper gasket,, the better in this case, I think the heads on the JD's move quite a bit on the studs, not many bolts there,,, thin gaskets mite not be able to be squeezed enough to hold the seal. Thicker,, may not flex so much. and compress slightly in a low spot and fill it in,,,,, Good Luck! ChadS

My dyno has always gotten it put to it. then again, The dyno is painted green and the tractor, well, you know, it"s "The Farmall", enough said, hahahahahahahhahahahhahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahha
If you only new the gaskets we have blown getting to where we are now, I remember going through 3 in one night before our pull and getting the 4th the next morning and making the pull at 11. Now you know you are getting up there when the you start breaking things, It is like I say, Green boogers, baby poop, etc. hahahahah
Good luck, Man it is fun ribing you, sure would be boring if there were only one color of tractor. PS go copper, ours has been apart so many times and we still use the same one, if you cant find any copper let me know I have a 4x8 ft sheet that I might be able to scrap some off if need be. Oh, ARP Fastners, expensive but they are holding ours together, Later, Ryan

Yea.. if you could see the rest of the dyno.. its Red.. LOL... I guess this was its chance to get even... I don't mind replacing the gasket... That's easy.. I just don't want it to happen too many times.. lol.. I think the Grade 10's should work.. I don't think ARP is going to have what I need.. (but then.. I haven't looked.) I don't mind taking a little ribbing from you.. but someone ones got to stop that Moline...

Has anyone ever "o-ringed" a Deere two-cylinder block or head? The way they do with super hi-compression racing engines or ones that run tons of boost?

First you have to stop the head flexing. The flat heads on the A&G have several spots to reinforce. The cyclone head is not as bad. Then we "O" ring the head and the block. If using a stock type gasket .005-.006 wire protrusion.Any more and it sometimes cuts the gasket. Maybe a little more on soft copper. We "O" ring the head a different diam than the block to give it a double lock.No lead washers good studs and tall nuts. Bring to torque in at least 6 steps. On "G" 50,75,100, 125 175 210 Run & cool and recheck torque. Earl In Illinois

Earl, the head is a flathead that has been Pinned.. Its an old head that Jerry W. did a long time ago... A puller.. I'm not ignoring you on the HP and compression questions.. The G really isn't very big.. actually is a small Cubed G.. It is bore and stroked.. Just didn't have the $$$$ when I was buying parts for this tractor a few years ago.. There are A's out there bigger and more HP than this G will ever have... (The engine has been together for a few years.. just never could get the rest of the tractor together.) I'd have to go back and look at the numbers for the compression... We did cc the engine before the tractor was put together.. She was only at about 85 when it blew.. but still had more in it... and we haven't done any tuning.. valves are set very loose.. The stock G gaskets are metal/composite/metal.. Not sure which route I am going to take.. Thanks for info guys... JDGnut

You said our head was thin?? Is it a cyclone milled down?? I was never one to mill them thin?We always tried to make compression with the piston. The other thing is as you go higher on comp. your chance are greater on preignition. If that engine pings one time due to low octane fuel, too hot of plug, timing too fast, get ready for a head gasket. Good luck. Earl

its usually 94 and octane booster..but sometimes av gas..... ..... i believe thats 100-104...or somthing in that range.....it sparknocks sometimes when its cold..but when it gets above 150..it goes like crazy when lugged..... ...it will take out headgaskets..i don't know whey..both head and block have been surface ground too..... ....i believe the heads flexing..because everything is flat...and its blown them knocking or not.

Blowing the head gasket with that low of an octane is pretty normal.. it ignites too early.. I won't running anything under 110 in my tractors.. its High dollar stuff.. but it doesn't knock... I might have to run 114 in this new tractor.. If I'm going to be cheap.. I'll mix a little pump gas with the high octane fuel for moving tractors around the house.. but I'll run it out.. or change it before loading the tractors.. If you are blowing head gaskets/and knocking look for a higher octane.. You'll have to find a race shop, or someone that is racing.. You can also try the VP or Sunoco web sites (probably end up calling them) to find a local dealer... Good Luck

I have an A block w/ o-rings in it. They probably dont need to be there, but they arent going to hurt anything. Try your local auto parts store for a Fel-Pro head gasket. They make one for an A, so they may make one for a G also; and they are cheaper than a stock Deere gasket. I too have thought about APR head studs, may look in the ARP book Monday and see what I can come up with.

Anyone know what the advantage of the ARP studs would be??? We have someone that will make Grade 10 studs.. (I just didn't when I put this engine together..) Drew... O-rings maybe over kill.. but I would have NO problems going that route... once it is done... You know they are going to hold... (Sometimes take a little more retorquing than a stock gasket..) Some ARP studs are made of 220,000 psi metal alloy vs. 150,000 psi alloy for a common grade eight fastener. The threads will have to be mighty deep into the cast iron. Or those studs will strip the threads right out of the cast without straining.

Was that a stock replacement head gasket? I have helped out a freind with a dirt track car that had way to much compression for the stock fel pro gasket and he went to a copper head gasket with studs Fel Pro copper gasket and arp stud kit. He had his block 0 decked and the heads flat milled and had no more trouble after doing this.

Yes.. that was a stock gasket.. I haven't tried the Fel-Pro gaskets for the 2 cylinders... but we have tried other aftermarket gaskets.. (not on this tractor) and some of the aftermarket one didn't even make it out the door... put a stock gasket on.. and they have been pulling for a few yrs... JDGnut

the firering is over rated. I have a fire ring in my block in our A, and we still blow stock headgaskets. We ended up buying the 60 head gasket and it hasn't thought about blowing since. The 60 gasket is steel on both sides vs. the A that steel right and the composite. I don't know what your G headgasket is, but you want one that has at least one side steel, both sides would be good. Would like to know what kinda compression or h/p numbers your runnin..but os would everyone else. hope this helps a little and lookin forward to some info..haha....
