I'm not trying to start a brand war, but just curious what most people use(pick-up, dually, 2-ton, or road tractor)and why. I currently use a 1-ton pick-up but was thinking of a dedicated tractor hauler and a smaller vehicle to be a daily driver. I was wandering if you could license a road tractor as a recreational vehicle(because that is what it would be) to avoid the steep price of Ins. and Lic. Thanks for any input, pat

Check the used truck market, used trucks, 90 and up can be bought for less than 20,000 easy. A nice truck with enough engine and comforts can be had for around 10,000 if you look.

I am building a school bus for a hauler. Front part living area & rear for tractor. Will put on RV tags not worry about weight on tags or CDL. You only need a place to cook sleep & port-a-poty. You could cut off & use as a gooseneck puller & have room for cheerleaders. School buses are cheep mine is a diesel for fuel milage.

Up North Puller,
Thanks for the info about the sleep, cook, and port-a-potty. That may be the way to go for me if I can add those items to a road tractor with air brakes(some motor homes have air brakes, right). I would like to run a large truck for pulls but I don't like the idea of going to jail over it or paying what companys pay that make a living with treir trucks!! Thanks you all, great info!,Pat

I use my 85 3/4 ton chevy and what ever trailer i can borrow. Prefer a gooseneck as they pull much easier. I am going to build a 30 foot goose neck this summer. brakes tiedowns ramps, all built how I want them to be. Should turn out nice!

A note on the farm tag, last summer a guy I know was stopped by a Virginia State Trooper on the way to a tractor pull and the trooper said he knew
about the pull and he was in violation of his farm
tag by useing his farm tagged truck to haul his
pulling tractor, but I know of alot of guys who do it.Also in Virginia you have to sign a statement
that you are engaged in farming and meet certain minium requirements and believe its a felony to
lie on these forms.Something to consider.

I have heard people getting stoped for running farm plates in this situation , SO FAR it hasn't happened to me , maybe I am lucky . Our tractors are just farm tractors , by that I mean we use them for farming , just open them up a little and go pulling . Maybe that's why I've gotten by so far .

Use a 1988 R-688 Mack , farm plated , and a 48ft drop deck trailer . Trailer is in partnership with a neighbor , works out well . Haul 3 10 to 16,000lb tractors around , two are ours and haul another for a buddy most of the time .
Used to use a dual tandem gooseneck and a 94 Chevy K3500 but the semi works lots better especially when it comes to stopping . Also have a hopper bottom grain trailer for my own use .

Sounds good guys, I like the Idea of Farm Licensing a Pete more every day! Any leads on where to find a decent one (prefer an older 379 with a 425 Cat or 400 Cummins)for less than 20-25K?? Need for minor rebuilding not a problem if reflected in price.

On my Peterbilt I have a stand up sleeper . Bunk bed , TV , Microwave , storage boxes , 4 side boxes - on the outside . Kinda tight if 2 people are standing , but one can get around really good .

I use our 93 internatonal 9370. Have a 40 ton lowbow. We can put 5 narrow front end tractors on it. Also use this truck on the dairy farm

I can't speak to the subject of licensing your vehicles but when it comes to insurance the least expensive way to insure your towing vehicle is to have it classed as farm use...and it should be used in that way. You can also insure your tractor for a "stated value" (specific amount) on your farm policy.

My father in law uses his 2001 Dodge hummin Cummins, auto w/ 12,000# Diamond Back 5th wheel.

I will use our FL70 Freightliner with 20K Trailking trailer. I personally prefer a manual tranny in the pickup but after driving a million+ miles in a school bus over the past 50 years. My father in law is ready for the auto.

Before I buy another pickup I am going to look into an old Pete or KW. Certainly get a lot more truck for probably not that much more of an investment. I guess it would depend on how much of a rebuild was needed.

it all depends on your state and insurance company. I am in the process of getting a truck and trailer together to pull my tractors. In our state, alabama, we can license trucks as farm and get away with it. Check with your local insurance companies, they can help you. If you own a truck and or trucking company, you can do it that way also.
