Hope someone can point me in the right direction here? We"re putting together an 88, and want to take the bore up to 4.3. Local shop says they would put in an automotive type sleeve pressed in to block and then fill bottom with hard block mix. Problem to me though is that all the motors I see done like this all leak water into the pan! Is there anything we can use that will make things work out alright? Any help is really appreciated, thanks!

DWB -

Like the others, I use a step in the bottom web of the block and then turn a mating step on the sleeve. The difference in what I do is that I use a .040" step instead of .020". Also, I have nearly a dozen engines (both 6cyl and 4cyl) using this method that have the sleeve extending through the lower web, with no problems.

I too have NEVER had one leak like this and I get to run a full water jacket, which (to me) is better for the durability of the engine...

Regards,

I agree with Cody,if you leave a .020 ridge in the bottom of the block and on the sleeve with a.001 press fit,a bead of hi temp loctite works great.I have 2 engines I put together this way one 4 years ago one 3 years ago, have had no trouble with either.

How much stroke are you using? If you are using under a 5" stroke, you can counterbore the bottom of the block and press the sleeve in against the bottom of the block. This is the way that most V8 engines are sleeved. When you have to let the sleeve hang down through the bottom of the block, that is when sealing problems begin. I have had 2 blocks with pressed sleeves. One was 4 7/16 and one was 4 3/8 and both sealed with no problems. Good luck.

We are right at 5 inch stroke, using 77 rods. I understand what you are saying about the counterbore. You ever put anything around it at all, hard block, silicone, anything??

Neither engine had hardblock in them. I was told that winshield epoxy works very good to seal sleeves into the block. I'm going to try it on my next engine.
