YOU WILL HAVE TO GRIND TOP OF CASE BY ENGINE COVER, YOU WILL ALSO HAVE TO GRIND SECTION OF CASE WHERE RODS PASS BY REAR OF CASE (WALL BETWEEN TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE CASE). A LOT OF TIMES IT IS EASIER TO JUST CUT SQUARE HOLES IN REAR WALL AND BOLT IN PANS FOR CLEARANCE. 7.25 INCH IS NOT REALLY ANY HARDER THAN 7 INCH TO MAKE FIT. THE CAM IS VERY DIFFICULT, GET PROFESSIONAL TO DO IT SCHOOLER MOTORSPORTS WILL HOOK YOU UP.

your block stock is 4.5"....add .125 to it and you get 4.625....4 5/8 bore. on the cam, you have to either turn it down on a lathe where the rods/crank journals go around, or flat spot it (time consuming but stronger/more durable). its all so the rods will miss, the cam is the hold back on 2 cyl. stroke..lol..we have an A with a 7.25" crank..not ALOT of work..but still ahd to flat spot the cam and grind on teh back plate..and the top

Walt - You can go 7.5" but you have to want that crank in there awfull bad. 7" is much easier and if done right, will be trouble free and easy to drive and maintain.

Walt - You will have to turn the cam down to clear the rods for sure. Some grinding on the back of the case and top where the access cover is. I haven"t done one yet but have my eye on a "41 if the present owner and I can get together on the price.

Re: cam down ? in reply to walt jd b, 03-25-2005 18:57:14
Walt - The cam is too large in diameter to allow the longer throws on the crank to clear. On A & G tractors it is common to grind flat spots on the cam between the lobes to clear the rods. The problem with the B cam is that it is hollow to allow the oil to flow to the bearings. If you grind or turn too much off of the cam, it will be history. We turned one down with no problem. We used what ever the dimeter is for the bearing on the end. I think it was .750".

I heard a guy once used a 50 cam because it was solid. Then you can flatspot it w/o problems.

Walt: Forget about those B rods. Your gonna end up using something else and a smaller journal than stock. As long as the checkbook allows, if you are going to stroke it, try to find a powerblock or look at having yours sleeved. I think WTW might have an extra powerblock.

You can do whatever your wallet can afford. Would venture to say that people going to 8 will have a short life expectancy. I have talked with a couple guys that went 8+ but I'd give them a year or less. Kinda depends what you want for journal size - the bigger the journal, the better the chance of it holding together, but the harder it is to clear. The smaller they are, the bigger you can fit, but the more likely it is to break. The guys that I know of when with really small journala... I would rather have a big crank with some girth than a really big crank and itty bitty journals.

Walt, I think it wold be foolish to go 6.5". It is going to cost you the same up to about 7 or 7.5 - I would suggest Kieth Merfeld - Tell him you want to go 7.25" with the Oliver Rods. You can go bigger, but if you are trying to minimize work, work, this will really help. You MIGHT be able to just grind on the back case without going thru. At 7" I am almost certain you could get away with it. Just remember, like the Weenie said, "if you are going to whip a bear, whip a Grizzly". 7.5 will fit and should be reliable, just makes for a lot of grinding.

SCHOOLERS PHONE NUMBER 1-666-748-4475. HE MAY BE VERY BUSY RIGHT NOW BUT DON"T GIVE UP HE WILL BE A BIG HELP. IF YOU STROKE YOUR B TO 7 OR 7.25 YOU CAN MANAGE THIS, IT IS NOT TOO HARD. IT WILL TAKE TIME THOUGH. DON"T BE IN A HURRY DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. IF YOU FIND A BLOCK FOR A 48 OR NEWER B YOU CAND BORE IT LARGER THAN THE EARLY BLOCK AND SCHOOLER HAS NICE SHORT PISTONS TO FIT. THE RODS ARE ACTUALLY WELDED, FARMALL H AT THE CRANK END AND JDB ON THE PISTON END. YOU MAY NEED TO FIND A HEISLER HEAD IF YOU WANT TO RAISE THE COMPRESSION. ONE LAST THING SCHOOLER WILL TELL YOU GUYS ARE BUILDING 7.5 TO 7.75 STROKER B"S OR EVEN LARGER NOW. DON"T WAST YOUR TIME WITH THAT MUCH STROKE BECAUSE THE CRANKS BREAK. PULLING IS GREAT FUN ONLY IF YOU CAN TAKE YOUR TRACTOR HOME IN ONE PIECE.

Never used Schooler - left him messages 3 or 4 times and he never called me back. Not sure what he really does - don"t think he does cranks or machine work.

There are a lot better rods to use than Farmall H rods, as explained above.

THE OLIVER RODS MUST BE NEWER THAN THE 77 AND 88 TRACTORS, I BELIEVE THEY WERE SPLASH LUBED. THE FARMALL H RODS ARE PRESSURE LUBED. SCHOOLER HAS YOUR CRANK STROKED OUTSIDE HIS SHOP BUT HE KNOWS WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE WHEN YOU TELL HIM WHAT TRACTOR AND WHAT PARTS YOU WANT TO USE. HE DOES EXCELLENT CARB WORK AND HE ALSO GRINDS CAMS SO THEY CLEAR THE RODS. THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT HE IS BUSY AND IF YOU ARE STARTING A BIG PROJECT IT IS BETTER TO START IN THE FALL WHEN YOU HAVE TIME THAN NOW WHEN IT IS TO LATE TO BE READY IN TIME TO PULL.

Many guys don't run pressure lube. When you weld 2 rods together to make one, sometimes you lose the passage. Also, these things aren't doing any more plowing, so splash lube seems to hold up.
