Would you suggest switching to electronic ignition make a better puller (IH-M)?

Are there any good/bad kits?

What is downside of electronics?

runnung 2 set ups for 9 years...no problems so far. They do seem to start easier. I have the pertronix kits w/resistor. Good luck.

Electronic is the only way to go excellent response and easier starting also add adapters to run car plugs(Bosch Platnium)

the electronics either work or don't. with points if you have a problem you can check it out with a test light. there is no perfomance gain. if you run the right voltage coil or a resistor the points will last a long time.

Dan-thanks for info.

Question-if we did NOT utilize resistor (points), wouldn't we have a hotter spark? I'm not sure points longevity is a big goal of pulling, is it? Or-will they not even last one day?

the reason for the resistor is if your running 12 volt power with 6 volt coil. if you run 12 volt coil or coil with built in resistor you can run straight voltage (12 volts). these guys always talk about hotter spark plugs,hotter coils,and msd units. i,ve ran 12.5 to 1 comp. on 118 octane fuel,or mixed alky and 94 octane. on the coldest plugs we could get. with a stock 12 volt coil and points ignition, or the pertronics and it has worked just fine. found more hp gains with valve settings, carburation changes, and the tube length coming into the carb.

I can't see how you can even compare the reliability between points and electronic. I've had electronic on my M for 9 years and never had to touch it. I just put ignighter ignition in my boys oliver 77 and gained 4 horse at 540 and it also holds low end horsepower much better than before. I put MSD blaster 2 coil that comes with resister on tractor at the same time. The tractor starts better and is more throttle responsive. For the money I spent and the reliability I got you can't beat it. Why do you think they stopped putting points in cars years ago.

So what you mean is you don't know if the electronic unit was responsible for the HP gain or if you had a weak coil before you put the hotter one on.

I do know for shure the other coil was ok because I did dyno it before I replaced it with the MSD coil. It only dynoed 1/2 horse less. I was saving a little typing. Pertronics were I purchased the ignition recomended a hotter coil and MSD sends a blaster 2 coil with there own resister for the coil. I also intalled electronic ignition on a H farmall and that gained 3 horse at 540, but gained 5 horse at 400 rpms on low end. The reson I use 400 rpms on low end is because that is how low my M&W conversion wheel goes to properly dyno by pressures. I have also dynoed them at 450 rpms and the gain is almost the same.
