I am thinking about getting into tractor pulling and would like to build a 400 case. I think that I can get down to 4500lbs and would like to pull up to 7500. What should I do to make the 400 healthy. I have heard of people putting in a disel 830 block and running gas heads off of a 70 series. What kind of horsepower do I need to not only compete but come close to winning.Who has knows the tricks to building a case puller.

Hi there. I built a 400 Case a couple of years ago. I really doubt if you can get it down to 4,500. I took off everything posible and it still weights about 5,000 with me on it. I think the motor is about 252 stock. I bored the seleves to 4.25 (put in some 3020 JD pistons)and stroked it to 6.25. About 366 cu. in. Competition cam. rebuilt carb. Some port and polishing. don't know how much HP I have, the PTO slips at about 87. It not a real big tractor but we have a lot of fun with it and it has won it's share of trophys.

Thanks for the reply. Stroking that sucker to 6.25 is quite a bit. Didn't they have a 5" stroke stock. How much did that cost and what machine shop did it?
Did the 3020 pistons need any machining done to them? Who built your cam? Did you use the stock heads or did you use the 70 series? Sorry for all the questions but thanks Jaker

It will handle the 6.25 stroke with a minimal amount of interior block grinding. I also had to take off the bottom of the seleves. The biggest problem was turning the cam down about 5 times to get it to clear. The cam isn't soo thin that it will break. I think it did have a 5" stroke. I had to take off about 400/1000 of the top of the piston. They were 3020 gas pistons and it worked out real well as that was the depth of the dish in the piston. That 251 motor is built like a tank and is really heavy with 5 main bearings. I live in mid-Mich and I had it e at a shop in Cadalic Mich. I think the crank ran about $450. Sent the cam to Roberts Carb shop. I did use the stock heads. You could gain some if you went that way. I'll tell you that old girl has some tork. I can run 5th gear in 5,500 on about any track. 5th gear in 6,500 gives me a little trouble on a real good track. You can call me at 989 587 6921 in thevening if you want.

Do you know the MPH that you are pulling in 5th and was also wondering what size tires. Thanks.

We have a 4.5 MPH horn on our sled. I can run about 2/3-3/4 open with 14.9x38 tires. I would guess it would run about 5.5 at full RPM's
