was reading thru archives today looking for ways to slow down my M in a low gear only club. I saw apost saying that 560 gears will work in an M, and will slow it down cinsiderably. is this correct, and if so do use only the rig and pinion gears themselves? or will the whole differential iinterchange? Does anyone know for shure? thanks in advance sorry for the spelling, DC

I PULL A M WITH A LOWER FIRST GEAR AND IT MADE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. I NO LONGER CHOKE OUT IN SOME OF THE HEAVY CLASSES.

YOU WANT TO PUT A 560 RING AND PINION IN AN (M)
NOT GOING TO WORK !
YOUR IN A FIRST GEAR PULL, 2-3/4 MPH OR 3MPH, SPEED LIMIT. AT HIGH IDLE (M) IS GOING TO RUN 2.60MPH, THE LAST THING YOU WANT TO DO IS SLOW DOWN ! WHEEL SPEED, CREATES FRICTION, ALSO MOMENTIUM. STAY WHERE YOUR AT. iF YOUR PULLING ABOVE 8000LB SPEND THE MONEY ON MOTOR WORK !
FIGHTING THE SAME BATTLE, IN FIRST GEAR PULLING.

PULLING A SUPER M !

HAVE A GOOD EVENING !

counter shaft gears in a m are keyed 560 gears are splined 400 ring and pinion will work in a 560 then a 560 might work in a m

I'm sure that it can be done. Find you an old M rearend and an old 560 rearend and tear them to pieces to see what will work and what can be made to work. A parts book for an M and one for a 560 will help alot too.. You will be suprised with the different ratios that you can make work. Someone on the IH board will probably email you the parts book pades that you need.

my thinking was a slower gear set might give more pulling power such as first gear pulls better than second on the same tractor

AS RPM'S COME DOWN SO DOES GROUND SPEED, SOME RPM'S ARE LOST IMMEADIATELY, AS THE BOAT LOADS, FRICTION OF THE PAN OVER COMES FRICTION, OR CONTACT POINT OF THE RUBBER ON THE GROUND !

PULLING LIGHTER WEIGHT CLASSES WILL ALSO HAVE THE SAME AFFECT, SPEED IS CRITICAL !
PULIING FIRST GEAR, AND CHOKING THE MOTOR MAY BE A SIGN, OF AN ENGINE PROBLEM, HOW MUCH BLOW BY,
BATES CORPORATION IN INDIANA MAY HAVE A LOW FIRST GEAR RATIO. ALSO THE IS AN INDIVIDUAL IN ROYAL CENTER IN, WHO IS A FARMALL BUFF, MIGHT HAVE JUST WHAT YOU NEED ! yOUR LOOKING FOR A (COTTON PICKER) FIRST GEAR. I WOULD CHOOSE NOT TO GO THAT WAY, BUT THAT'S OKAY !
ALL THINKS CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED, IT'S JUST THE MOST BANG FOR THE BUCK !
ANOTHER (5) HP MIGHT GET YOU OVER THE TOP !

HAVE A GOOD DAY SIR !

The trans gear set out of the right serial number W-6 will fit in an M and slow down first gear speed. You have to change both the driven gears and the slider gears.
