I have an unstyled a 53/4" x 9" using pratt and whitney pistons all the specs are on the money oil pressure is 20 lbs .003" rod clearance .020 side clearance .004 on the mains.piston clearance is at .012. it seems as though too much oil is getting trown up at pistons (I have thought of coffee cans with notch over bottoms of cylinders)or no oil is getting scraped down in the bores. the rings seem to be installed right with scrapers down I am considering putting cat oil rings on. the tractor runs great but the blue oil smoke is terrible. help anone thanks Paul

We put together a A with those pistons in it and put a regular oil ring on the bottom grove, had to turn the grove out a little wider. Also had to run .017 skirt clearance because the pistons grew .014 when put in an oven at 250 degres. The tractor has been running for 5 years and burns no oil. Hope this helps.

Hi Paul, sounds like my D last winter,(you know the one) went through all the things you have, plus blocking the oil from the valves, raising the front end of the tractor, draining the radiator, you name it.
My problem I really think was the ring was miss marked, and too smoooth finish on the bore, as I now know of 3 D's and a A that did the excat same thing after boring and new pistons and rings, always seems it is just one bore and the other is just fine and all were done by the same machine shop.
I rehoned that bore with med grit and put the oil ring in the correct way and no more smokeing,, run all last summer but is starting to put out a little whiteish, blue smoke if it idles to long now. this also is what fixed the others.
I'll email you a pic of mine to compare as you seen it run the other day, I may call you tonight also.
Bob

Is the front of your "A" setting real low ? I am curious as to when bored and honed if they finished it like a automotive cyl.? What is the piston skirt clearance? Do your pistons have drain back holes under the oil ring?Do you have a scraper ring above the oil ring?Does the surface of the ring look like it is seating ok? Earl In Illinois

Earl every thing looks good .012 skirt clearance bore is pretty rough like it should be actually maybe too rough and the nose down attitude is not very much i even parked on gravel pile to get nose up to see if that would help nothing.I put oil holes under rings because there were none but only on top of piston not sure about them on bottom??? jd pistons only have on top side?? I got cat d8 oil rins today and will try and let you know tommorrow.Am pretty convinced pratt& whitney rings A. dont hold enough oil in ring assemblyB. dont have enough tensionC.scraping edges not sharp enough Paul

Paul, Sounds like your on the right track let us know how you come out. Take that old oil ring and put it in the bore and have someone shine a flashlight around the outside edge. Earl
