Suitcase weights

Our club currently does not allow suitcase weights to be used. Our safety committee and rules meeting is coming up and we are looking to propose being able to use them. Can you guys help with some reasons why they should be used: safety, convienence,etc..... ..... Any input would be great. Does any one know if suitcase weights were an option before 1960, if so on what tractor line, and where could I find information about it. Thanks for the help.

The rules used in Central New York for the antique classes are NATPA or local rules that are close to them.

Division 1 tractors are limited to wheel weights only and lower drawbar height. The lower drawbar height makes it virtually impossible to get enough lift on the front ends to need additional weight up there, so wheel weights, typically on the rear only are enough to allow you to change weight classes. The rules are intended to keep them near factory stock, not only in appearance but performace too. This keeps the costs down, makes for a reasonable entry level pulling class and also a class for the restoration buffs to pull in too.

Division 2 and up allow more engine mods, have higher drawbar heights, require wheelie bars, but allow suitcase weights to be used. Now it's more important to get the balance right so suitcase weights are allowed.

Your club decision should be based on what type of competition you wish to promote.

SUIT CASE WEIGHTS ARE A VERY INPORTANT THING FOR PULLING. ON SOME TRACKS WITHOUT SUITCASE WEIGHTS TO MOVE TRACTORS WILL STAND STRAIGHT UP AND CAUSE A VERY BAD SAFETY PROBLEM. WHEELIE BARS,KILL SWICTHES, AND ADD ON WEIGHTS SEEM TO BE SOMETHING THAT ARE NEEDED TO HELP KEEP THE TRACTORS SAFE (PLUS THE INSURANCE COMPANY LIKES THEM). I KNOW JUST LIKE WE WERE, A FIGHT TO GET CHANGES MADE BUT 1 ACCIDENT OR ALMOST ACCIDENT WILL SURE OPEN SOME EYES. MY 2 CENTS WORTH ONLY!!JOHN--USAP

Suitcase weights reduce the time necessary to weight up for classes in addition to easier balancing of the tractor.

However, make sure the weights are secured with metal fasteners. In event of an accident (tioover) the weights cannot come loose and fall on the dricer or pull officials.

Because if you don"t allow suitcase weights, you have people putting lead in their front wheels, hiding weights between the radiator and the grill and wherever else you can think of.

I pulled at 1 pull in Indiana that didn"t let you use suitcase weights because they wanted the tractors to look "original". Never mind that the engines are putting out 3-4 times the HP that the stock tractors did.

The 460-560 IH's were available with front suitcase weights and they were built before 1960. Tell them that suitcase weights cause less back problems than 150lb. wheel weights. factory weights are hard to find, very expensive,and a pain in the rear to move around. that should be all the reason you need.

Actually, 560's did not come from the factory with suitcase weights, they had factory "slab" type front weights. 7-806's were the first IH's to have suitcase weights although one of their weight brackets will bolt to a 560.
