I also have switched to Victor gaskets on the last few projects and really like the results. They have a much wider fire ring and on both sides which has stopped the leaks ,period. I also start in the middle of the head when retorquing and work back and forth across the head out to the ends and do it in three stages with the final time being the spec setting of the book. I test run and get hot and recheck but as of yet no additional torque was needed. You may also consider switching to new threaded studs rather than bolts to eliminate the stretch factor. Several companies offer them for different models. Migraine

What brand of stock gasket are you using? Stay away from Fel-Pro. They are not metal on both sides of gasket and dont last long. Victor-Renz or a Case IH gasket work well. Be sure you block deck and head are flat. Coat head gasket with eather copper coat or high temp aluminum paint before installing. Also do NOT over torque the head bolts. 80 ft. lbs max touque. Did you shave your head? If so it may be giving in the area you are blowing your gasket. I have a 421 'M' in its 9th year 12.5 comp. and still same head gasket.

yes it is alot harder to seal a copper head gasket.you need a good deck surface and a good head surface. If you are having a hard time sealing w/ a factory gasket, you'll have an uphill battle trying to seal a copper one.you can try heat on the copper gasket to get it to seat, this works well.ChadS sells them and they are fairly inexpensive.
