I have a stock 48 creeper gear john deere A and I keep running out of traction with my 13.9's. I have found a set of worn firestones that are 15.5 x 38 and I am wondering if my tractor will be able to turn them. Also will a 15.5 rim be what I would want to mount them on.
Thanks

I have a 52 JD A bored .125 with high compression aluminum pistons, running 16.9X38"s on a 14 in. rim, i run from 7100-8100 pounds. On hard tracks it will pull down pretty good in 8100 but i still have broke loose before the engine gave up. Go with 16.9"s on a 14 in. rim

The creeper gear A"s did not start til 1950. But, if you do have the creeper A 15.5 will not be a problem to turn over.

if rules allow, go to a 16.9x38. You may have to drop a gear, but you will be moving A LOT faster!. If your tractor is a 48 it is not a creeper. Is it a high-low trans? I have mounted 16.9's on a 12" rim with good results.Otherwise a 14" rim is ideal. 15.5's...I wouldn't bother. Keep the 13's on. The 15.5's are a low profile tire. Are you under a spped limit or max tire size? All play a factor in what you can do. !4.9 would also be an excellent choice, more than a 15.5 if you can't run 16.9.

We have a '47 A with a newer clutch and primary gear. Have used 15.5" tires for the last year, pulling 4500-6500# classes. In 4500-6000#, we pull third gear where speeds allow. 6500# requires second, loss of traction is a problem most of the time. Have just bought a pair of 16.9" x 38" tires for pulls that will allow.

The stock block has been bored, P & W pistons, longer rods, cam, head work, intake and carb work, ignition. Stroked crank and roller rockers are being installed at this time. 16.9's will be a must, if not 18.4's.

JDTH, what else have you done to your motor? Also are you not recomending the 15.5's or would you keep them. I am concerned that I may recieve some greif if I go to a 16.9 tire at some of the pulls around me. And to clarify it is a 48A but I have changed the pulley and reduction gear from a 51A. Thanks

Justb changing the two gears on the pulley, first reduction doesn't make it as slow as the creeper gear.

The change of the clutch and primary gears slowed the mph down approx. 10 percent in each gear at the same rpm.

Would you happen to know the tooth count on the gears you installed? Thanks
