I have a question on tires. Why can a JD G or a Farmall M go up two tire sizes? While moline GB or Farmall w-9 or any other wheatland tractor has to drop tire sizes? Especially in a first gear class. When 14.9 or 15.5x38's will make those tractors go faster. But those same tires on the weatland will slow them down. IS THIS RIGHT?

If you really want it to be fair, set a max tire size by square inches on the ground for the class. You can relate that size tire with the weight capacity by the new ratings from the tire company to be safe. If there is a safer way to class tractors by tire size and weight I don't know about it yet would be willing to learn. Saftey first guys. One injury and we can all kiss our beloved hobbies goodbye.

RASCAL
It does slow the tractor down on a (g) or (gb).
It seems more people are starting to pull a wheatland style tractor that is causing clubs to reevaluate tire rules. I'm waitng for the 2005 rules in our club. I have a G moline I'd like to pull.
I think on anysize tire it would be fun to pull. THE (M)'S AND (G) DEERE'S ADAPTED TO THE SPEED LIMIT,or were always allowed to jump tire size.
Either way, in all pulling, tire size should be based on just that. Ons size fitt's all

Hey guys aren't you missing the SAFETY issue (big deal with insurance these days) A MM GB with 15-34 (now 18.4-34) 6 ply rears has tires rated at 4400 pounds load capacity each at 16 psi - 8 ply is 5080 pounds capacity at 20 psi. If you put 15.5-38 (I can't seem to find much else in 15.5 width) 6 ply - its only rated at 3520 pounds at 20 psi; if I stay with 15x34" stock rims biggest I can put on is even smaller (less load capacity) and would be a big problem on a 15" wide rim. Now lets think about the real conditions, if tractor is weighted a GB can top 10,000 pounds (base GB Diesel without weight is about 7600 per literature) - so if 80% of that is on rears, you have exceeded the capacity of a 15.5 or smaller tire of any diameter - and look at the tires under load especially if someone drops the pressure to get more traction (and further drops load capacity) - from Engineering stance tires should be OE size or +1 - thats what car racers do. What happens if a tire blows under full power - even at 3-4 MPH?

And on another line - do I understand that you can use the OE 15-34 but not the replacement 18.4-34 which from engineering perspective is identical except for nomenclature.

Just about everyplace that I pull, the rules are one size over stock. On my GBD that gives me 20.8/34's . In a first gear class, at wide open it will go faster than 3.5 mph

The club that I belong to will allow 16-9 tires in the 6000# 4 1/2 MPH class but no larger than 15-5 in the 6500# 3 1/2 MPH class. Most of the tractors that were built in the 6500 lb. size had the equivlent of 16-9 tires as stock but in that pulling class the club requires smaller tires. Actually the GB came out with 14 x 34 tires and the replacement tire is 16-9 on wide rims but only 14 x 34 on 12 inch rims and its marked on the tire.

I'm sorry but you are wrong! The G/GTB's came with 14/34 tires. The GB's came with 15/34's, I have the orginal Book's to prove it.

Sorry: I bought my GB with very worn 14 x 34 tires on it and other research that i've done bore it out as original. Of coarse a lot happens to a tractor over 50 years. That make the case that I discribed even worse. If you want to pull a GB in the 6500# class it would be necessary to replace your 15 x 34 tires with 15.5 tires. I don't know what size of todays tire replaced the 15 x 34 but if the 14 x 34 was replaced with 16.9 it would be reasonable that it would be 18.4. Am I right.

Jerry:

would you be interested in selling your worn 14-34's
IF they were road warn and raked back, I could trade a pair of 14.9-38's firestone field and road,
very select tire (no boots) perfect for cutting,
but I'm looking for the ultimate set of 14-34's
(straight) numbering, no-replacements.

thank you sir !

Yes, You are correct, the replacement for the 15/34 tire is a 18.4/34.When I responded earlier I was talking about one size over stock. One size over stock would be 20.8/34. Am I rite. If you don't believe me check out the Firestone tire chart.
