Question for Sled Owner/Operators

Our club has purchased an Agri-Tronix sled monitor (with the gear tooth sensor) to replace the current radar unit and measuring wheel setup. For those of you using the gear tooth sensor, where did you mount the sprocket and sensor? Do you have any problems with dirt and dust on the sensor?

We were going to mount the sprocket on the sled"s drive axle pinion yoke, but one of the guys said it is to dirty and will hinder the sensors performance. Thus the questions above. Another member is contacting Agri-Tronix about this. I am looking for actual users input. Thanks.

I thank you all for your comments. Looks like a little dust and dirt will not hurt the eye's performance. One of the interesting points I see here is that most of you are using starter rings as the sprocket. Agri-Tronix told us that a sprocket with 60 teeth is optimal. I guess it depends on the speed the starter ring is turning thus the number of pulses it generates. Thanks again.

We've been running one on our sleds for several years. On one it's mounted off the pinion right behind the pan where a lot of dust comes up while being pulled and we haven't had any problems with the sensor.

I rebuilt our sled this past year.I installed a new control myself. I mounted a starter ring on one of the brake drums , It work good. no problems. It run about 8 inches off the ground and is exposed to a lot of dirt and still no problem. It appears the bigger the sprocket or stater ring the better,.I used a starter ring off a 855 cummins

Our sled has an automotive type clutch on the drive line with a flywheel and pressure plate and clutch facings. The flywheel still has a starter ring on it and we pointed the sensor toward the starter ring with it's many teeth. The instructions advised using a sprocket with as many teeth as possible. This setup has worked very well for us, I don't recall any problems with dust or dirt. The only problem we have had in two plus years with the monitor is the alligator clips we use to connect to the battery for power can sometimes lose contact when the horn for overspeed sounds. Need a more positive conection at the battery

I have been running our's off of a sprocket I welded on the drive line, but I don't like it as well. I thought about running it off of the starter ring but I didn't know if it would read right, being that the teeth are so close together. How many pulses or readings do you get that way? I know the more the better. Our monitor will read up to 25,000.

Can't remember off hand the number of pulses, but it works well. I believe the air gap on the sensor is important, the starter ring runs true and allows for a good uniform, close setting.

Our club has a set up like you are talking about. Our sprocket is under the sled and runs off a shaft that is run from a belt off one of the wheels. We have never had a problem with dust or dirt and it does get a little dirty down there. I would be more concerned about mounting the eye where the wires can't get damaged. We have run this system for about 3-4 years. We updated it 2 years ago with the 2 monitor set up. That is great. I did paint the sled about 3 years ago and did have to scrape the paint off of the eye. But it is pretty durable.
