I HAVE BEEN PULLING A WD FOR THE PAST 4 YEARS AND HAD GOOD LUCK. ONLY HAVE $2800 INVESTED. THAT INCLUDES A NEW MOTOR WITH WD45 CRANK. ALSO PUT A SET OF 38" WHEELS ON BACK. IT PULLS GOOD FROM 3350# ALL THE WAY TO 4500# IN THE LOCAL 4MPH CLASS.

The 460 is the most stock horsepower you own.I would weight it down just a little to the 6500 class on the rear wheels and ride it straight down the track. You will be pleased, and not spend much either.

I would take the AC and put the wheelie bars and weight brackets on it and go have a ball. if you have enough power and the rules allow I would recoomend a 38 inch wheel on them but that usually requires some engine mods. Get your hitch up to the specs the rules allow, here it is 18 inches from center of axle and either 18 or 20 inches from the ground depending on whose sled we are pulling. Then work on balancing the tractor and reading the track. hehe now don' get too serious about it at first or you will ruin all the fun!!!

Hook and pull and have a good time. Ya probably won' win them all but as long as ya have a good time and enjoy the companionship it''s all worth it !

The absolute cheapest tractor to pull would be a Minneapolis Moline U or UB. Parts are all over and bigger and better late engine parts bolt right on. Just a few hundred dollars and a low compression 283 cu in U is a high compression 403 cu in engine good for any speed limit classes. Interchangeability is the key word. These things are like leggos and easy to work on.

Tim:

Don't forget your Ford 8N, they are a very competitive tractor stock, especially if you have 2500 thru 2750 weight classes. No engine modifications necessary. Call me if you would like 918-434-6754, or email.

Those little Ford 901's are little powerhouses as well or can easily be made into one. A local puller has one in the 4000 & 4500lb classes and the flag man has to jog to keep up with him. There must be some four cylinder car engine that will bolt in there. I'm certain he's running 90+HP. My 65HP doesn't even come close in speed.

Each to thier own but I would suggest getting good in a stock class before souping $$$ tractors. If you take care of the three most important factors in winning. Which are traction, traction and traction. Then you can go onto more wheel speed in higher classes.

Spend your money on a good trailer and take all three stock and see which one you like best.

I don't know much about the other tractors, but assuming you are going to pull in a (3.5mph)speed limit class, you can stick a power block in a later model B (1947-1952) and play in creeper gear for less than $1500. You may not win, but you should be competitive. Keep it in 3500 and 4000 though...

That 460 is a good tractor, especially if you put a combine engine in one...but I think an allis WC/WD is the cheapest HP per $ you can get, with the 460 a close second....

First buy an Oliver.Once you go the right green you will never go back.

actually anything is fun to pull - guess the big question is how much you want to spend!!

First choice- the 460. 2nd choice-the 460 next the 460. I run a county fair pull; if a 460 is entered, people wonder who might come in second.

I would say your best bet is probably the 460 if your local rules will allow a tractor of that year to pull. The 6 cyl will allow for plenty of upgrades down the road, or you can find a combine motor that will bolt in.

just my opinion

Joe

Hop up the WD or put in a combine motor in the 460.

I'd go with the WD for a beginner, I've been pulling mine for 4 years now and with a little upgrade each year you can do very well.

Find a c or d series case find a A5505 head for it have it shaved 100 thousanths and you will have a godd 3 or 3.5 speed limited tractor for easily 1500. And they are tuff to beat if balanced good. you can pull 3500-5500 depending on which tractor you have.
