Would anyone with knowledge of engine swaps in the JD5020 please respond. I am aware of the 6619JD but would like knowledge of the Detroit 318, Cummins 903, Cat 3208 and any others that are known. I understand that 4020dt did have material relating to the swaps. I was refering to a response back in Feb. of 04. Would the Cat 3208 make a good swap? Thanks

I agree that the 6619 would probably be the easiest to swap for the 531, but they are pretty pricey. A good one that is warrantied will cost approxametly $8000. The advantage is that they will practially bolt right in the location. Other engines are 3-5 thousand and I have a 3208 Cat that is almost new. They have worked good in Track hoes and scrapers. I know they do not have sleeves. Does anyone know how they pulled when used in the 5020? I just plan light scraper work on a farm. Any installation drawings for a adapter plate for 318, 903, or 3208? A late 6030 engine (531 w/turbo and intercooler) probably would reach 225 to 235 hp if one is available.

no,a 3208 is a throw away engine.
out of the engines you listed a JD 619 will be the most reliable.
a 12.5 from a 9400 i believe will fit too,but then you have to get the puters on it to manage fuel.

Redman get a grip on reality, I have had several 3208's at various times and while it was made to be a throwaway engine it will still serve a great purpose. I think I could buy the 3208 adapt it and still have money in my pocket instead of busting my budget with a 619. Way tooooo many people hunting for the BBdeere for the prostock classes.

I wonder if they're looking in the right places. A lot of the self-propelled forage harvesters were 6619-powered, and those can be picked up dirt cheap in a lot of cases. And then you could sell the rest of the machine for parts or scrap iron. I don't know what it would cost to adapt in a 3208, but I'd go for a bolt-in 6619 any time even if were a couple thousand more.

Thanks guys--I have about decided to put a 6619 in the tractor just because of the ease of installation and keeping the tractor looking like a JD. If there are any good ones available that are complete and running I am interested.
Thanks again for all the input.

The Deere 12.5L and the latest 13.5L released for 2005 are screaming engines. 500+HP from a bone stock engine with warrenty. And the emissions are cleaner than the air people breath in some parts of the US and Mexico. The tractor would not be de-valued the same as an off brand transplant would be.

I have to agree with Redman, the 3208 is a throw
away engine. they were a piece of crap in a truck
and in a tractor. Knew a guy that had a 4-150 White and it spent more time in the shop than out getting engine repairs done or engine replaced.
