I have some extra cash that I'm going to put in into my puller. The A pulls good, but I want a little more power out of the girl.

Heres what I got:

51' JD A with a 60 block, with the 60 carb
Electronic Ignition and hotter coil on the way
creeper gear, tires: 12.4 short/long
usually pull from 5000lb to 6500lb on dirt tracks

Replace the manifold with a 60 propane manifold, by-pass the oil bath air cleaner and use a paper filter at the intake and plane the head (Maybe 200/1000ths). These will make a difference without investing big bucks.

Are those propane manifolds easy to find? I've heard a lot of guys talk about those propane manifolds.

Re: the propane manifold - you probably can get one through some of the bigger outfits that part-out tractors - Dennis Polk Equipment or 2 Cylinder Plus for example.

What will a 60 regular block do for an A. Just curious as I have an A that I pull with and always looking for ideas?

The blocks are very identical, but I do believe that the 60 was built to handle a little more stress. The block is bigger, as I had to cut my sideframes in order to fit it in. The big difference is the carbs. My 60 has a DLTX-81 Duplex. I thought I read somewhere that a the 60 had a higher redline that the A. I couldn't tell ya because I've modified my gov. Just my 2 cents.

Dear Double:

I have about 100 hooks or so on my 51 'A'. Drop me an e-mail at [email protected] and I'll tell you what I've done and what I'm going to do next. It may help you decide how to spend your money.

Steve

First get rid of those tires and get some good ones!

Yeah, I know the tires are an issue. I was thinking of finding a pair of 15.5x38's. I know she could handle 16.9's, but they may be a little extreme.

With a creeper gear you should have plenty of vinegar for 16.9s.
