Hi guys. I got ignored over at the John Deere site and was thinking maybe my question was "Puller" related stuff.
I have a 1948 John Deere G with 14 wide 9 bolt rims and 15.5x38 tires,,,, and have heard that a 34 inch tire will gear the tractor speed down. A couple questions we had were: does JD or someone make a 34 inch, 14-16 wide 9 bolt wheel,,,,, or will they fit my old stock centers/hubs. Is this a practical move to even consider, or should I look for horsepower gain instead, right now it is all stock. Would like to raise a few eyebrows next summer out here in tha west. Thank you.

There are a fair amount of 34in rims out there.. Some were used for duals on tractors like 4020's and IH's that came stock with the 34in rims.. You can also buy a set of 34in rims and put centers in them.. Slowing down the tractor??? Will depend on what size of 34in tire you find.. a 14.9x38 will be simialar in to a 18.4x34. .(depending on air pressure... and load.. ) There's not going to be much that is shorter than the 15.5's you have now.. (maybe a 14.9x34.. but not many of those around.) Time to look for some HP... JDGnut

Oldy moldy, to expand on what JDGnut said, I don't know of any 34" tire (except an 11.2-34) that will have a smaller diameter than your 15.5's. A 16.9-34 is practically the same diameter as a 14.9-38 which, of course, is larger in diameter than what you now have, with an 18.4 being about 2 1/2 to 3 inches taller yet. And most 34" rims are heavier than the 14x38" rims you are running now, too. The 16.9-34 is a good "next step up" tire from a 15.5-38 after you have utilized all power you have and need more tire without drastically affecting your setup. Get the power first, then do the tires..:-) Hope this helps. Mike

Thanks guys for the reply,,,,, , I'm looking for the best "cheep" bang for the buck, and trying a whole bunch of tricks that don't amount to much are pretty hard on a wallet. I'm watching this website and learnin. See ya..... .....
