deck plate

I hear people talk about and sell deck plates for engine blocks what are the purposes for a deck plate on a engine, I think they are bolted in between the cylinder head and block????? ?????
please explain thanks

A deck plate makes for more space, longer stroke, needs longer rod. These little engines are getting awful big.

A deck plate can be put ontop of the block to increase the deck height to allow longer sleeves. Deck plates also increase the structural integerty of the block if it has been cut out a lot for larger sleeves. BushogPapa is correct about a torque plate. A torque plate simulates the distortion caused by torqing the head down. A hole can go out of round by .001" or more when the head/torque plate is torqued down.

Deck Plates are used to make a more "Truely Round Bore"..when the head is bolted down.. It is a very thick plate that is bolted to the block when it is being Bored or Honed...Not used after that...
