I am rebuilding a 1946 Farmall M. Would like about 60 hp out of tractor as I would like to still use it around the farm and also pull at local pulls. Any ideas ?

If it a 248 cu in, (3-7/8 bore) pull out the sleeves, and run 4-1/8 from a 450. That will step it up to 281 cu in. The OD of the M sleeve (248ci) is 4.125. the 450 piston is 4.125 bore. With the sleeves out, you will have the sleeve flange still open in the top of the block, they make rings that fill in the gaps, or you can run with out them, use a 450 head gasket, they have a larger firering diameter to cover the bigger bores from the 450. it will seal on the block deck, instead of the top of the sleeve. Will make 60 hp with a blind man tuning it, for the cost of an inframe rebuild kit. Hope this helps, ChadS

If you were really going to use it, wouldn"t it be better to use sleeves. I"m getting 60 horse out of mine with 4" step top pistons and a little carb work. I would just hate to see the guy have to bore a good block sometime.

I dont think you will have to mill the head to make 60+hp. I would rework the head since you have it apart. It will have around 135-140 psi of compression, so the head gasket will be fine, use the 450 head gasket for sure if you do this. The M fire ring is smaller than the 450,, the 450 gasket covers the surface left behind by the sleeve flange. They do make rings to fit inthere, then you can use a M head gasket again. Should be a good workhorse!! ChadS
