John Deere G governor ?

Getting ready to put my G back together. Before I do is there any thing I should change such as the weights or anything else that will help.The weights and pins are in good shape not too sloppy but move freely.Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Before you start thinking about changing weights, like putting in weights from an A or B, check the parts book. They are the same part numbers so are the same weights used in all tractors. You could try shaving some off of them. Just wanted to let you know they are the same weights as in other models. Hope it helps!

You can accomplish the same by just pre-loading the governor spring more. Dial in too much gain and she will "hunt" however. Most old two cylinders need the throttle and governors set-up. The reason why some pull better when lugged down. Is that a lazy governor hasn't opened the throttle all the way until too many rpms are lost.

My G seemed to be running slow and I was told to look at that linkage, from the govenor spring to the carb. Mine turned out to be a half a hole PAST the hole in the carb instead of before it. I shortened it all I could while still being able to shut the tractor off by pulling the throttle lever back. That really helped, and the the engine still doesn't surge under when not under a load.

With my Deere's I've found you can get all the RPM's you dare give it by adjusting the linkages.

It's in the operators manual in the carb adjustment section. Where they suggest adjusting the rod for 1/2 of the linkage hole dia.Adjust for 3/4, 1.0 or 1-1/4 etc of the dia until she hunts a little.

JD720, one of the most important things to look for while you have your governor off your tractor (besides tight pins) is the radius on the weight that contacts the thrust bearing in the governor. These will often wear a flat spot on them after several years of service. It is an easy job to remove this flat spot and re-radius the arm. If the governor is sluggish and everything else is ok quite often this is the problem. Mike
