Just wondering what is a wiser choice if you dont want to dump alotta cash and just have fun pulling? A JD B or a Farmall H?

It really depends on the year of the B. i Pull a 1952 JD B that has sat in the shed for over 15 years. all i did was pull it out new plugs and wires and off we went. i always did fairly well with it and won at one of the largest pulls i went to.

Bone stock, it's up to the driver, weight balance and tire traction. Either tractor will win. Souped for the division II,IV & V classes the H will have more HP/wheel speed.

Well my main question is stock for stock, the H would only have 12-4x38 on the rear and i could go bigger on the JD but i dont wanna mess with the H at all. The Jd i can mess with a little though. So if i took them to a pulling track with no work done with the 12.4 tires on the H and a JD with either 13.6 or 14.9 tires on it what would outpull the other?

LOL, I cant answer that. I got beat last thanksgiving USAP by a pair of B JD, and I pull a H!! Right WTW? LOL! Stock to stock, weight the same on both of em, would be close, depends on the track. Seen a few tough H's and a few tough JD B's Id say if the balance on both was right, would be a good grudge pull!! The H engine can be bored a bit maybe a 350 engine kit, more HP for the buck, but a few dollars spent in the right places on the B, would be just as good, maybe better. ChadS

A couple of years ago I had the pleasure to talk to an older gentleman that ran a IH dealership in the 40's and 50's. He told me that they would bring new H's and M's out to compare with a potential customers JD B's and A's. They would bring out the M or SuM's every time to compare with an A. If the owner had a newer single stick B they would come up with some reason not bring out the H or even a SuH. He said there was no comparison with a newer B. The newer B would out work the H or SuH every time. Older JD B's were no problem. The slower gearing in the newer B's was a big advantage.

I agree 100 percent. Plowing with a Super H a few years 2bottom plow, and we had an old B I had fixed up, it had the slow low gear, it would pull the 2 bottom plow in the tough places alot better than the Super H just due to the slower ground speed, where the super H would try to speed through it and stall sometimes,, the B would go through it with a grunt, but never had to raise the plow in the same ground that stalled the Super H. the B was only 25 hp! the H was 43! The JD had alot more torque over that H in my opinion. Just cause the tractor is small, dont mean it wont pull. I got that ZAU out and gonna put it in the field in front of a 12 ft disk,, wonder what that will be like,, ChadS

CHAD - MANY years ago I had the same experience with a '40 B and My '54 Super H. Hauling manure one spring with the Super H and We had a wet muddy sharp uphill turn with the Super H & spreader that I had to drop into 3rd gear with the Super H to pull up. For whatever reason I ended up with the old styled 4-speed '40 B the next day... and that old thing just hammered right up & around that muddy hill with the old original almost bald 9" x 38" Goodyears in 4th gear. Keep in mind the Super H had new 23 Deg. Firestones, fluid, set of weights, etc. etc and almost carried the frt wheels up hill with the spreader loaded and ran almost 7 MPH in 4th gear, and the B only ran at most 4-1/2 to 5 mph in 4th and was spinning like mad on the slick ground. No weights, fluid, lights, etc. on the B so the Super H outweighed it by well over 1000#, maybe 1500#. Those old 2-cyl. will lug at ultra-low RPM, but were a crude contraption compared to a Farmall. The Super H had replaced a '39 H a few years before.
