Just wondering what some of you pullers think about modifying tires on stock tractors whether it might be spinning on concrete, top cutting cleats, excessive road wear, etc?

Most clubs around here [NC] don't allow it, but a few obviously slip through. I know from experience that it can help on some tracks. I can see some merit to both sides of the argument. What do you guys think?

Flogger, I have a set of 13.6 38 coop's on my farm stock DC that we use for black top. They have a lot of lug and are a soft tire. After running them backwards all summer they have a nice sharp edge on them. Turned them around for our last dirt pull and they hooked like crazy. Best way to sharpen farm stock-uncut tires I know of. DCPULLER

Sled Dog is right, but not many of the tractors in our antique classes have seen an emplement in years. They were built for pulling. Take a stock tractor and put it in the antique class and see how far you get. It's not the tires. HA HA probably something to do with that big "tinkered with" engine.

It really does not matter as long as everyone is going by the same rules and are enforced. Case in point, I was at a pull a couple of weeks ago and rules says no cut tires allowed in stock and there were tractors there that still had the saw blade marks on the cleats and the owners looked me in the eye and tried to tell me they were not cut. Someone like that needs to be watched.

'appeciate it Agent Orange. You know I'm a little surprised the Red Hoss is just sitting there letting you talk all this trash. Even though you did spank him kinda hard, and on his home track to boot I would have expected him to respond in one way or another. Betcha he's figuring on getting his mojo back about Grand Finale time. All I can say is may the best man/tractor win... Enjoyed seeing and pulling with you gentlemen again.

I personally think it is a good thing. It allows you maximize the horsepower your tractor has and can be done relatively cheaply. We sharpen all of our pulling tires with a flapwheel on a hand grinder. Available at any harware store for about 8 bucks and puts a helluva edge on a good hard tire.

People that alter their tires have no place in stock classes. The farmers and other that work or show their tractors deserve a place to pull against like competition. If you are going to alter your tires by any method pull in classes where the rules permit it. You only cause argument and hard feelings when you (think) you have put one past the other pullers. Many people have quit participating in our sport due to this kind of behavior. This does not promote the integrity nor good will for our sport.

Who said anything about cutting tires in stock classes? We pull in the 5000 and 7500 lb open classes where tire alterations are perfectly legal.

Cut tires put everybody on a more even playing ground even in stock classes. The clubs around here (Central Michigan) that have no cut tire rules leave the traction up to the puller that finds the hardest tires with the best road wear on them. An old hard tire with road wear that has pointed the leading edge of the tire will out pull a brand new tire any day of the week. I have an awsume set of 14.9 uncut that are hard and wore to the right angle. I found them in a salvage yard. My mouth waters when I see a pull that says "no cut tires". I throw the old 14.9's on and nobody can touch me. Another thing about "no cut tire" pulls is the pull takes twice as long because everbody is argueing about everbody elses "illegal" tires. Now when I go to pulls that allow top cut tires it evens the playing field because now everybody has tires just like mine. Now we can get back to pulling and who can set their tractor up and pull the best.
