I have a 1946 JD G that i want to pull with in antique tractor pulls. Does anyone have any experience pulling with one? What gear shoul i pull in? The main place i would like to pull in is at Brigden"s Steam Threasher Show. They do classes by hp. I know it"s not fair!!!! What hp class should i go in. You can enter 2 classes. I was thinking entering 30-40hp class and 40-50 hp class...it"s all for fun...no prizes. I want to get weight for my G some day. What would a JD G weigh with a full tank of fuel and all fluids. Any and all help is appreciated as i have never done this before. I am 18 and am very, very, very interested in this. Thanks.

Based on the pic, you need to find some pressed steel 9 hole 34 x 14 rims and put some 15.5 or 16.9 tires on the back. This will slow it down a little. I've got a G puller and until I did this, I was outpulled by a creeper gear A. Got lot's of secrets. Email me

Had three of em and liked all three.First of all you could have two kind of pistons in it,1 all fuel which could be from 38 hp up to 44 hp or 2, high compression aluminum(M&W maybe)pistons which could bring you from 47 hp up to 55 hp.Pull a plug and see if you can see the piston come up and surround the spark plug hole and if it does it should be the high compression pistons,if it doesen't then you probably have the all fuel pistons in it.Compression should be 60 plus with all fuel and 100psi plus with the high compression.It should weigh about 5855lbs with no fluid in the tires.Pull in first gear because a G is 2.5mph in first and it takes a lot of power to handle that speed for a stocker.Good luck and enjoy that ole G,Jack(TN).

Jerry, the factory tires for a '48 A were 11-38 which is the current 12.4-38. Hope this helps. Mike

12.4-38s are the same as 11-38s which most likely came on your tractor. Some very late styled A's with the square axle housings and the single stick tranny with slower gears came with 12-38's which would be like 13.6-38s, these tractors generally had the 2 step rims like a later G or M Farmall had. "S'up" to you what you want of either of these two sizes.

13.6 38's will be as close to stock as you can get.
