O.T. My Question to any one is: What was the Largest in CU.IN Factory Original Equipment,Automotive Type, Non-Competition, naturally Aspitrated Carberated V-8 Engine ever produced? Don't say the 540 Chev cause it is not a GM Product. I say that the 549 IH was it. Awaiting your comments. John

Nice try Guys and a good discussion. I enjoyed reading your responses and all have some Merit. The 600 series IH Engine was a failed Experiment as Brass decided to pursue Diesel Engine design,Hence the Power Stroke Series as we know it today.Break up of the Co. Stalled Design and Production for a While and cost me my Job in the Advertising Dept. but the Ford Dubbed PowerStroke is alive and well. The 549 C.I. remains King of the Automotive[Trucks are Automotive also]type ,Naturally aspirated[Carburated] V8's ever produced by any Mfg. In my Humble opinion.

These are truck engines you are describing, I read it as AUTO engines. I want to see a picture of the V6's put together. What did they put those in? ChadS

To the GMC V-6/V-12 site. We have an old GMC grain truck with the 305 V-6 in it, and it is a torque monster.

If a 549 IHC V8 qualifies as an automotive engine, then what does it have that an 800 V8 does not? I understood it as something that an ordinary person could get on the road...

The only 800 cubic-inch IH V-8 I'm aware of is the IH V-800 DIESEL. It was used in tractors like the 4586. A Kinze/Cummins repower was popular for those tractors.

LOOKING IN THE FEDERAL MOGUL PARTS BOOK,

I found a 13.1 L 800" V8 3.3125 IHC engine. I have no info, but I think it is a gas,

Now, I think this one should get an honorable mention...
Waukesha L6....hang on to your hats, 47.4 L 2894 cu. in. 8.5" bore....Gas or Diesel? I don't know..but still...dang! I'll keep looking...AC

Also found 3 seperate listings for a GMC 10.4L 637 c.i. V8. 2 listings say DIESEL, this says nothing. Same part numbers, but no head specs..wonder if it was a gas? I don't think it is a Detroit either, because it would have it listed....?????

Actually, the V-549 from Harvester had a big brother...the V-605. Never seen one, but I've read about 'em.

But GM had a bigger engine...the 702. It was TWO 351 cid GMC V-6 truck motors connected inline, and I've seen pics somewhere--maybe even here--of an LP version, used to power oil well rigs or somethin'...but that would be a V-12, if my first-grade math (6+6=12) is correct.

Yep, only ever saw two, one was in a mid '60's GMC cabover truck and the other as a stationary power unit. Guy with the truck said it was unbelievable the torque it had.

Caddy had the 472CID, 500CID (started in the 69 Eldorado) then dropped it to a 425 in '77.

The engine family that IHC made after the v and vs549 gas motors included a 537 cid and a 605 cid. They were made from 1975 until 1982 when IH got out of the gasoline motor business for their trucks. The 800 cid V-8 motor was a diesel that was used in over the road applications.

ford made a 1090 cu in v8 they used it in tanks it was a gas burner. Seen one in an old puller magazine years ago. Would like to find one.
