I am looking for a winter project! I want a 77 or 88 Oliver. I would like to here the pro and cons and why. I don't intend on boring, stroking, etc. Maybe an overbore kit and a little head work, but wanting to stay close to stock due to little funds. Thanks for any advise.

I am not a pulling expert but have been around Olivers forever. They are both 6 cylinders but the 88 has a bigger block and you can do more with it to get hp. The 77 is lighter and you can do more with weight to get it where you want it. Around here some pulls run a 3750 lb weight class and it is nearly impossible to get an 88 down to that weight. I have a stock 77 with hydraulics on pressed steel wheels that weighs around 3900 lbs depending on whose scales I am on and what I had for lunch. If I wanted to remove the hydraulic unit and pto I could get it to 3750 with no trouble. I like keeping it useable though.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
