Has anyone done away with the live PTO on the left side to lose the weight? If so, how? I was thinking of welding the two shafts together. Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

When I changed mine, I found a UB that didn't have live power and used the solid left shaft and brake housing from it. I'm sure there are others out there that don't have live power.
I changed mine mostly because it slipped somtimes.

All you need is a solid bull pinion from the right side of a donor ub or either side of a gb. The shaft will slide out after you take the clutch and brake parts out of the way. When you reasemble it use just the parts that are necessary for the brakes. You can cut the outer housing off and make your own cover too. Just a note though the right side housing and cover will not fit the left side they are drilled differnt.
