tire height question?

From my experience I have found that Armstrong has the tallest 14.9 x 38" tire. We run both firestone and armstrong 23 degree tires. Last weekend I picked up a old set of B.F. Goodrich 45 degree tires to have for a parade tractor. To my suprise when I got them home they were 3 to 4 inches taller than the firestones or armstrongs. All of the tires were at 10 psi. The Goodriches also seem wider, all are on 12" rims. Are the old 45"s taller than the 23"s?

Doesn't a tall tire usually tend to buckle the sidewall and let the tread bars tip back. Preventing the sharp trailing edge from digging into the track? Isn't a deep tread 45 tire better on very loose tracks and a short bar height 23 prefered for a hard track?

Yes, I have a set of those BF 14.9 45 degree tires. They are almost as tall as 18.4X34. It was the BF tire that was the only tire I know that was like that, that I have found. compared to the goodyears, firestones etc,, aint found a set taller than these BF 14.9, VS another set of 14.9 of another brand. Good find!! Wish I had another set of them. ChadS

Chads, you ever pull with 45's anymore? I never have seen anyone do much with them.

Yes, on our div 1 farm stock Super H. that is where the BF 14.9 are on. Give the tractor a faster ground speed in low,, and they seem to do very well on this particular tractor, heavier, the better I have learned about them. on crumbly tracks, they are almost unbeatable. ChadS

about 5 years ago I came across a pair of 45 degree BF goodrich tires..... ...I never took them off. Wow do they bite. I think the "old time" way of thinking...45 degree tire makers knew what they were doing...

Are you talking about RADIALS ?? I've got a set of BFGoodrich radial 18.4-38's 45 angle, and wondered how good they were for pulling. 8500lb class.??

no, not radials, these are 16.9X34, but they are HARD. When the bar is hard, it won't roll in the groove....very important. A soft tire is really useless for pulling unless you are pulling in "dirt".

A radial tire would work pretty well, the aggrivating part of the radial is dialing in the air pressure on them, they are a soft side wall tire, much like a slick on a drag car. they put alot of torque to the ground. Most clubs ban them just beacuse they work so well if you beat em with them. ChadS

I sure would like to know that answer to question. I'm got the same thing. I have no luck with anything in 45 degree. I was not even going to try them but maybe I should before I spend money. The ones I have checked pretty bad.
