Is that tractor the h/460 you were working on a while back. Where did you find the one piece hood? I just got a hold of a RD501 any ideas on how to get it to fit in a 460?

Michael, It is my 460H. I liked it before, but I love it now!! LOL!! I did get rid of the cement block!! LOL! Should be a different piece to look at in the pits, I designed a hydrostatic steering system for it, no steering shafts, or rack and pinion. 100% IH too!! As for the Red Diamond,, man, you better get a big shoehorn!! I have not put one in a 460. So I dont know what it exactly takes to put it in there. it is alot of work, I know that!! My opinion is this,, it is easier to use a M-560 for the red diamond power plant conversion. There is lots more room in the bellhousing and the frame rails to fit it in there VS the H-460 bellhousing. Email me on the hood if you want, will tell you about it. ChadS

They Hydrostatic steering setup will work great... I know a bunch of people running that set up.. (using the late model steering valves.) The only problem is usually getting the correct side valve to match the cylinders.. (or vise vesa) sometimes too fast.. sometimes too slow.. sometimes.. just right.. haha.. There are a few systems out there that don't require a pump.. I really have not seen many of these.. and don't know where to find the parts... If you use a pump.. the load sensing valve work great because they do not build any pressure (take less hp) until you turn the wheel... Post.. or send me some pics...
(I'll send U a pic of the rack set up on the G.. ) JDGnut

I used everything of the combine, slave cyl, flow divider, and steering column. Only thing I have to do is double check the line pressures to make sure a Chevy power steering pump will power the system. If this works,, Saved about 60 lbs fromthe steering shafts. That condition you described when it loads the engine,, may not be a bad thing at all, depends I guess, Suppose you are spinning a bit and the front is up,, just turn the steering wheel to take a quick 5 hp out of it, and maybe hook up a bit more at the end of the pull??? Pipe dreaming I guess on that. LOL!! Wont know till I get into that situation. The Flow divider, has 6 lines to run the entire steering system, 2 lines for the main pressure, and return,(from the pump) then there is 2 hoses for the steering cyl, and then 2 larger lines that come out of the steering column that hooks up to the flow divider. Pretty simple set up,, just a few hoses. I have already got the steering column mounted to the tractor, I tell ya,, this thing looks more like a miniature 1066, if ya look at it the right way! LOL! I had that old stock 460 front bolster in it,, with no power steering,, it sucked,,, not to mention the rigging I had to do to make the shafts line up for the linkage. No more of the ugly shafts there,, and a bit more modern. Really, it would work on any custom built tractor, Parts are available at any junkyard that has the late IH 403 combines. ChadS

So you are still having to use a pump... I wish I could remember where the system was that didn't need the pump... but I don't think it was exactly "power" steering.. but better than stock.. the Rack systems sure turn easy.. but I havn't put a load on it yet.. JDGnut

Yes, I know when the combine still ran, with the engine off, you could not steer it. I dont think it will take much of a pump to run it, the way I understand it,, the chevy pump, puts out more pressure for its power steering, than IH used for this set up. ChadS
